  • Great Music but Poor Sound Quality at NAC

by Richw on 2018-04-08National Arts Centre / Centre national des Arts - OttawaRating: 3 out of 5

INTRO: I love Jim Cuddy and Blue Rodeo music . We have seen them in concert 7 times, including once in Sweden. Our daughters love Blue Rodeo and Jim Cuddy. I have every CD. OPENING ACTS: I really enjoy the opening acts that I have seen, not only at Blue Rodeo/Jim Cuddy concerts, but others as well. Barney Bentall was really good and new to me. Very good and in a style consistent with the concert. We have seen Devin Cuddy before as an opening act and again, it was very good. ADDED ACT: it was neat to see Sam Polley. When he was singing Cuddy style music, great and neat to see. Other songs were not in the style so much and didn’t like. MUSIC: Great! Always great. Glad Jim’s album is classic Cuddy. BAND: always very talented and great. Anne Lindsey was FANTASTIC! EXCEPTIONAL! We have seen talented fiddlers, but Anne was exceptional with an amazing range. Memorable! SOUND: very poor, and the worst I have heard at a Cuddy/Blue Rodeo concert. The base amplication was very bad, especially from I think the drummer. I put in ear plugs at one point to block out the high pitch sounds, and the base was just very bad noise. I almost had to step outside of the hall I found it so bad. This has happened to us on two previous occasions at the NAC. The Great Big Sea concert was the worst I have ever experienced. There were times that we couldn’t make out Cuddy’s song words. VERY POOR SOUND QUALITY! Too loud for venue? NOT SURE WE WOULD GO TO NAC FOR CONCERT IN FUTURE AS WE HAVE BAD SOUND QUALITY EXPERIENCE THERE PREVIOUSLY? I always expect it to be great at the NAC, but we have had better sound quality at Paladium/Corel/Canadian Tire Center.

Great show. He played some new songs and quite a few from Blue Rodeo. His guests played alot of their songs too. Preparing the next generation!

A fantastic night of Jim's new and old songs. The consummate entertainer! Loved the fact that both his sons were included; very talented! A wonderful night and well worth the money!

  • The band was great!

by firejoe on 2018-03-14Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

From the opening to the encore, the show was excellent. The band was tight and smooth. Enough cannot be said about Barney and Anne. Jim Cuddy was coming off illness and his voice was excellent. They played for almost three hours. Highly recommended. Side note to other fans. No one purchases a ticket to have another enibriated fan stand in front of them for the whole show spilling their drinks on everyone and believing this artist was only there for them. Please sit down and let the other paying customers enjoy the show they paid for.

Thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Jim Cuddy Band at the Burt last Friday evening. Twenty years on and still at the top of their game. And Anne Lindsay is amazing - what a talented lady! Also great to see Barney Bentall. That theatre is the perfect venue for these wonderful performers.

  • A group of hard working musicians really deliver

by Frostymoss on 2018-03-12Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

This is about as bare-bones and honest as a show can get. Very simple stage and lighting and just a bunch of great musicians doing what they do. Cuddy was his usual charming self easily engaging with the audience. Part of the fun was the fatherly jabs Cuddy took at his two sons who shared the stage with him. Barney Bentall was listed as the warm up act and he delivered a short, wonderful performance in that capacity, but he really was just another band member, appearing throughout the show. There was a family vibe with this group that was great to see and they really appear to enjoy doing what their doing. I'd encourage anyone attending a show to take Cuddy up on his offer for a free download of the Constellation album. It's really a great work and a good way to become familiar with the material you'll hear at the show (about 1/2 of the show is from the new album).

  • FANTASTIC!!!!

by shelshocked on 2018-03-06Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

I was not expecting to see such a great show. I have never been to see Blue Rodeo but have always wanted to see Barney Bental. I have new appreciation for Jim Cuddy, what an amazing musician...such talent on display for us to enjoy. I really liked the format of this show as well...not your standard opening band then the main performer but rather integrating the special guests throughout the show was a refreshing approach. The fiddler/vocalist and lead guitar were especially impressive as well, the drummer, bass player and keyboardist were something else too. Jim's son is an amazing talent and I am certain we will be hearing more for this budding young star. So, even if you are not a huge fan I can tell you that this show is a bargain for the buck and if your on the fence, just go! Related to the venue: I wish a person could get up and move to the music. For most of the show, and other shows I have been to at this venue the crowd remains seated to the point of numbness. Music is best enjoyed when moving to the rhythms and enjoying the moment..tough to do when your butt has grown into the seat.

  • Jim Cuddy and a "Cavalcade of Stars"

by Shields4880 on 2018-03-06Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Jim Cuddy came to Calgary on March 1 and brought with him, in his own words, a "cavalcade of stars." Cuddy gave plenty of space to his two sons who featured in two or more songs each. They are up and coming musicians who will blaze their own trail, but the proud father has given them a platform to allow the Canadian public to get to know them. They are talented musicians in their own right and we can expect them to leave their own mark on the Canadian Music scene. Barney Bentall was also brought on stage to join the Jim Cuddy Band for a few songs. Cuddy did a nice job of featuring his new album as well as playing old standards from his Blue Rodeo music. The new music was sufficiently familiar to the audience since each concert ticket sold included a digital download of the album "Constellation." The Jim Cuddy Band is an outstanding collection of musicians who bring their best to the game at every concert and they were a pleasure to watch. Anne Lindsey, the only female member of the band is a virtuoso violinist, and Colin Cripps and Basil Donovan (both members of Blue Rodeo) are musicians with many years of studio and road experience. Jim Cuddy is a Canadian treasure whose music stands the test of time. The concert was one of the best I have ever seen.

Superb music, great entertainers! Such a variety of genres, from rocking guitars to rollicking fiddle, every song was fabulous. Cuddy’s Voice is unforgettable.

  • Canadian talent at its best

by Smooch on 2018-03-04Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

A really fun concert, lots of variety in voices and song, some new, some old. A very relaxed atmosphere but still lively .

  • Sound Technicians Couldn't Get it Right

by musicmaven on 2018-03-04Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - CalgaryRating: 2 out of 5

We were at the show in Calgary on March 1 and what we got was musical mud. The sound was just dreadful. The only time we could make out the words was when Jim was solo on the piano. The Bass guitar generally drowned out the words, and the guitars and violin did the rest. This was especially disappointing when Jim's two sons were singing solo and they could have been singing Merry Christmas for all we could make out. We were at Serena Ryder at the Jack Singer last week and the sound was brilliant. The band knew to play softly when she started singing. Now I know it was a different venue, but in sound checks and at the concert, a good sound crew will make the adjustments. We go to a lot of concerts and really appreciate it when we can understand the singers and enjoy the music as well. Further to my comment about the sound, Sam Polley told the crowd that his CD was $10.00 and they shouldn't have come out if they didn't have $10.00 in their pockets. I don't know if this is classed as humour in Toronto, but in Alberta, it is not.

There really isn’t a bad seat at the jubilee.. Jim Cuddy NEVER fails to put in an amazing show, so talent and obviously runs in the family. We enjoyed every second of it!
