My granddaughter and I attend the Nutcracker every year. It’s a wonderful experience and we watch in awe. Thank you and Merry Christmas to all!!
My husband and I go to the Nutcracker every year. This year, it lacked a bit of lustre. There were some new costume designs - unfortunately they all looked the same now. The usual 'ribbon dance' was done without ribbons. The Arabian dance looked like the rest of the dances, and the choreography seemed less technical than previous years and simpler. It was a bit boring this year and there was no awe-factor. We were disappointed to say the least and hope AB can improve next year.
I remember seeing the nutcracker when I was younger, (early 20s,) and I loved it! This version seemed very different, however. There was less of the storyline... (where was the big battle scene between the mouse king and the nutcracker?!...) and instead, it seemed to be more of a showcase of the different dance partners. Even the dancing itself was off... there were so many instances where the dancers were noticeably out of sync with each other, and at least one large flub-up was made by one of the lead male dancers. It definitely wasn't my favorite version of this ballet, but it was a nice one-time experience. My only other critique about this experience, (and this has nothing to do with the show itself,) is that the parking situation at the Northern Jubilee is a NIGHTMARE. We waited approximately 30 minutes from the time we entered the lineup to the parkade, (just outside the bottom level,) to where we parked on the 3rd level. The delay actually made us late for the ballet, which was extremely frustrating. They need better parking attendants to keep things moving!!!
WE LOVE the Nutcracker! We go every year. This year we were disappointed that the Arabian, Chinese, Spanish and Russian characters and dances were removed. We love the tricks of all of the cultural dances that have always been done. In comparison the costumes and dances were more traditional and definitely lacked the WOW factor that we look forward to too. Don't get me wrong, the ballet was beautifully done, it's just that the WOW factor was not there. Please bring back these cultural representations and dances.
We so enjoyed this performance! The choreography, the dancing, the music, the beautiful costumes and sets were all so great! We had a really nice time.
Was disappointed in the performance this year. Was not aware that the production was mainly consisting of students. While they did a terrific job, I was not expecting a toned down version. I bought tickets in November and didn't see the 2nd Act was reimagined until December 8. Overall we found it a boring rendition. Thank goodness for the ESO! They did such a beautiful job
My 8 year old dance loving little girl was in awe. It was a magical experience for both myself, grandma, and my little lady. Beautiful job well done Alberta Ballet! We will be making this an annual girls trip.
A very disappointing presentation. Dancers were as talented as ever; however, by stripping any cultural references made Tchaikovsky’s dull and less global at a time when we should embrace our various cultural arts. Even the costumes were stripped to blend in with the colour ‘vanilla’ making it a monochromatic visual of bland cream and, well, beige. Hopefully they will improve on these if I decide to go in four years time.
This was terrible! It felt like a talent show and extremely disappointing.
The performance was wonderful however the experience was really terrible. Parking at the jubilee is horrendous took us over 30 minutes sitting outside of the building to get into the parking lot. Inside the venue we waited the entire 20 minute intermission to get a drink. Most snacks were already sold out. Only one person for the first 15 minutes working at the register and preparing the drinks. I love going to the nutcracker every year but after this experience I am really disappointed and doubtful I will go next year
My 10 year old daughter and I went to the Nutcracker on Friday. She has never been before! She kept saying, "Wow, it is so beautiful! Wow, it is so beautiful!" all evening. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole performance!
I loved the ballet and the fact that it invites aspiring ballerinas and ballet masters to participate. All of the duo and trio dances in the second half are splendid! I would like to see more community events in the foyer for the audience to participate in…. Various photo booths ( more than just 2), treasure hunts, quizzes, costumes…
This was my 1st ballet and it did not disappoint. I was captivated the whole time. I will for sure be checking out other ballet's in the future.
The venue was clean and cozy, all show participants and staff were very friendly. Outstanding polished performance and breathtaking orchestra music! The only deplete was attendees in the crowd with children that talked and moved up and out of their seats back and forth constantly throughout the show
A beautiful Christmas family classic, that you will enjoy.
Really loved the pre show activities for kids to get involved and excited about the show. The set and costumes were so beautiful. The music and dancing was magical. My daughter had the best time watching. Would have loved if the people in front of me hadn’t been on their phones half the time or the person behind could have not been bumping my seat the whole time.
The Nutcracker was once again a wonderful pre-Christmas treat. Beautiful sets, live orchestra and talented dancers made this a fantastic evening. I am happy to see this production back on stage after Covid lock downs, and it is new and improved too. Well Done.
I slept through the first half. Not cause it was bad. Just cause I had been coming off a long stretch of nights. But the second half that I had my eyes open for was really good. My favorite part was the girl snap chatting her "friends". We deduced that she must of had an only fans account cause there were a lot of thirsty dudes on her snap. I didn't get her snap deets so don't ask. Beer was cold. My favorite part about the play was the fact that we went an entire 2 hours without a single word being spoken. It was a godsend. Highly recommend this for dudes who messed up and need to "make up"
Specially enjoyed having a grand daughter dance in it. Dancing beautiful and so well done. Love the simplified but very effective set and lighting. Snowflake scene so beautiful. Did miss the colour and some numbers I wait for in second act. Dancing very fine but production seemed scaled down. Live Edmonton symphony music GLORIUS
Was looking forward to the new choreography but it was a dissapointment. Couldn't really tell who was what. All sweets looked the same, choreography was too similar, nothing really identified them or made their dances unique. I felt like all the dancer's ever did was another arabesque! Costumes were all white, nothing very colorful. Lacked any excitement and fun. Popcorn on the other hand was amazing and stole the show!
