Vancouver Whitecaps FC History
The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974 as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).
Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

What an amazing game. Whitecaps scored two goals right away and then LA Galaxy kicked it into high gear in the second half. Very exciting.
A really good match vs. the laegue leaders, full of action and not a dull moment. Amazing atomosphere, thanks to the southsiders ! The amazing BC Place adds to the exitement. Would definitely recommend. Go Whitecaps !
This was a great game, it's always fun and really enjoyable.
Had a GREAT time at the game. I thought that the bottomless popcorn bucket was a FANTASTIC bargain (whoever thought of this should get a big raise) We took our homestay student with us. He is from Sao Paulo, Brazil where they eat ,sleep, & breathe soccer and he said that he was impressed by the quality of the stadium, the skill level of the teams (well done Whitecaps) and the politeness of the people(both stadium staff & fans). He wants to see another game before he returns to Brazil. A SUPER experience all around !
The game was fabulous with intense battles for the ball, high skill levels, some very good goals and most importantly....a huge Whitecaps win! Barry Robson has elevated the team, bringing back memories of how Allan Ball inpired the Whitecaps to beat the might New York Cosmos and to go on to win the coveted Soccer Bowl. The Caps of today have have become a team in the true sense of the word and only teams win the big ones. The feeling in the stands on Wednesday night was one of optimism and pure and simple delight. If you haven't been to a game...Go! Warning though...You will become a fan.
Like most in the sellout crowd, we were excited to see our Whitecaps take on David Beckham and the rest of the Galaxy. I didn't appreciate some ppl booing / heckling every time Beckham got the ball though ... he is a world-class player and deserves more respect. For the 1st half, Whitecaps midfield and defence did a great job stifling Beckham, Robbie Keane, and Landon Donovan. And the Whitecaps' new guy, Robson, got a spectacular header in the net too! We were up 2-0! But in a nervous 2nd half, our Whitecaps defence yielded under Galaxy pressure to 2 beautiful Galaxy goals, one, a lovely shot from Beckham. Riveting tied game, fantastic atmosphere! Can we get some half-time entertainment on the field? like a mascot race? goal-kick contest? not this play-on-your-smartphone thing, pls.
Very good game but could only get odd single seats for myself, wife and son. I was informed that all seats were sold out but on arriving at my seat I saw lots of sections in lower stadium covered up. Why is this, when I'm sure you could have sold more tickets.
great game for the Whitecapes Vs the La Galaxy. Stadium is fantastic and seats have great views
Was a really great game to watch! Whitcaps scored twice in the first half, but then the LA Galaxy came back with a goal from Beckham! Who drove his team to get another goal to end up tieing the match. Brillant to watch! Kept you on the edge of your seat as to which team would get another goal!
I was expecting NY Red Bulls to lead the charge, but the Whitecaps seemed to dominate possession early on, and for the entire first half, Whitecaps had the majority of chances at goal. Poor Camilo just couldn't find the net! Whitecaps showing good stable play this season, and I love it. Even in the second half, I could tell NY stepped up their game, but Whitecaps still looked the better team. Only after the Whitecaps scored halfway thru the second half did NY really start looking dangerous. And darn it hurt when they equalized a few minutes before the game ended. Great atmosphere! Lively crowd (esp the Southsiders!) and concession stand lines weren't long. Good value for money!
The game was very entertaining, the crowd was so into it! very enjoyable with friends and family. The level of the Whitecaps is improving and it's awesome to be part of it.
For the price you can't beat these seats. We sat right behind one of the supporter's groups (Curva Collective) and had a great time participating in their chants. Not the best view to watch the game but it was still a ton of fun!
Good way to spend 2 hours having a good time. Too bad Vancouver is not more into soccer.
Where do I begin?... Overpriced for starters! The only reason I paid the amount I did was in the hopes of seeing a legendary European soccer player from the opposing team who didn't even turn up. Canadian fans are trying to hard at doing this soccer thing right and they've got it all wrong. Too much American pomp and ceremony at the beginning and I have never felt so inundated with sponsor advertisement at any professional sporting event, not even close. Why this event isn't more affordable is beyond me. It's not worth the price and people will eventually catch on. Pity.
Love what they have done in the stadium. Was very enjoyable to watch the game. Was a beautiful night and I loved the roof being open.
The atmosphere was amazing, we were sitting close to the 'cheer squad' and they kept us pumped throughout the whole game. I wish I knew the words to the songs they were singing
When it comes to sports teams in Vancouver the first team that comes to mind is the Canucks. However if it is entertainment for your value you're looking for then the Whitecaps are perfect. The stadium atmosphere is fantastic much better than the almost silent Rogers Arena during the Canucks games. The tickets prices are much more reasonable than the BC Lions who seem to increase ticket prices yearly where now it cost almost 40$ for the cheap seats. I firmly believe that in a couple years Whitecaps are going to have a much larger and devoted fan base, one they truly deserve.
We enjoyed the game, only negative was that the scoreboard wasn't working.
I was thoroughly entertained, great crowd, great match, great seats wonderful experience. Wonderful city!!
I have attended many soccer events and BC Place Stadium is amazing. The open roof gave us the feeling of Empire Stadium. It is easy to access via skytrain or bus and car.
