Vancouver Whitecaps FC History

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974  as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).

Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

The game was a lot of fun, especially in the "standing" section. Highly recommend this section to watch the game in.!!!

Great game! The 'Caps put on a great show, right from the start with the opening show and fireworks to the end of the game. I would have given 5 stars but I couldn't because of the boring section we were sitting in. We were almost dead center and halfway up the lower bowl. BOOORING, next time I'll pay less and sit in a corner or end, that seems to be where the fans are, not in the middle where people look like they're at the opera or watching a movie....... no one in our great seat area even cheered when we scored :/

It was great ... we will go again. The atmosphere was terrific and the game was exciting.

I live in the interior and don't often get the opportunity to come to Vancouver for a game. This one was definately worth the effort. The game ended in a tie but excitement had us on the edge of our seat throughout. The atmosphere between the Sounders fans and Whitecaps fans was incredible.

Seats were great - crowd was happy and involved. Loved the south-siders. Good service - we printed our tickets online for the first time - nice and easy!

I very much enjoyed the game. The atmosphere was fantastic and the people were a blast to be with. The staff was very helpful and sweet. The beer was delicious!!! I enjoyed that the roof opened up so I could also work on my tan :D

  • Whitecaps FC was Dyn-o-mite!

by blueandwhite on 2012-04-23BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome game to watch live! Great new stadium and the ever improving Whitecaps put on an exciting show. The over-sized scoreboard provides a really good close-up on plays that happen on the other end of the field making one feel like they were right there in the game! Lots of choices for food and lots of places to order from with small line-ups and no line-ups for the washrooms.

The seats were overpriced. We could have had seats with just as good a view for much less. Won't recommend the expensive seats to anyone and won't buy them again for myself. The seats were small and not very comfy. Entertainment was average.

It was my first time at the new BC Place and it looked great! Other than the scoreline for the Caps game it was a great experience.

Great game, too bad there was no goals scored, we had great seats for only $39. We will definitely attend another game.

  • Whitecaps first timer

by CdnLogan on 2012-03-26BC Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Venue: beautiful, great seats and feel. Amazing to be in an open stadium in BC while still being enclosed enough to enjoy the spring air. Staff: friendly, great, accommodating Event: did not see a goal. Saw some pretty shotty ref calls, but hey that is what soccer can be all about. The vibe was solid and fun and look forward to seeing another match.

  • Whitecaps offense scrappy, but overall improvement

by SaleemH on 2012-03-26BC Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

I originally had a pair of tix (for wife & myself) but a friend decided to join us just before kick-off. Guest services @ BC Place were able to get us 3-in-a-row, AND a free upgrade to a much better section :) Game started on-time, with usual enjoyable/somewhat-dramatic Whitecaps game-opening celebration (+ fireworks!). Whitecaps showed good improvement from 2011 season as far as ball possession was concerned. Defense was solid led by captain Jay DeMerit. Transition to midfield was effective. But Whitecaps forwards were a bit scrappy and lacklustre, barely registering any real shots on goal. 0-0 final score. Fun times though!

  • tie game but they are doing great

    by Ryan3d on 2012-03-26BC Place - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

Y.P lee was the best player during the game. they didn't win the game but playing was fun. we might need great striker for the goal. 0-0 game was not exciting score.

  • Whitecaps are winners!

by mtbakertheatre on 2012-03-12BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent game, and excellent entertainment value. Great support by fans. Finally the club has spent a few dollars putting on a show at the beginning. Le Toux is superb! Critique: despite our efforts to shore up defense, we still have shortcomings: why is a man often left open in the middle of our goal, and our defensemen not nearer our goal than they are. We must learn to mark better. Good going, YP--you and Jay played well! We certainly have learned how to head the ball out of our goal, so defense can now learn to keep a better eye on their forwards...or we'll pay the price. Mid and fwds look great. A much improved team. Thanks, Coach Rennie. Looks like we'll win a few more games, both away and home, this year. Get the bus ready (for us fans!) for Seattle and Portland. We need objective reporting since local media looks too good for us....when rest of the league treats us like losers. Be objective, media.

Great atmosphere, great game, great win! Whitecaps with the opener vs a newly minted Canadian MLS squad in the Impact.

  • First time at a Whitecaps game.

by Planet on 2012-03-12BC Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Firstly, the viewing and comfort at BC Place was incredible. There is probably not a bad seat in the house. Refreshments were easily purchased without long lineups. The soccer match had many exciting moments and the game showcased the talent of professional soccer players.

80 dollars for MLS football is a little steep to be honest, but it's almost worth the price of admission watching the southsiders sing and dance.

  • WhiteCaps game was great

by TheKingofHolland on 2012-03-12BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

A beautiful stadium with a great atmosphere. We were in the section directly to the right of the 'whitecaps southside' fan section. It really added to the overall experience: non-stop chanting, hilarious commentating and the 'BOOM' effect at each goalie kick-off! I brought my dad and my 3-year old to this game and all three of us had an amazing time!
