Vancouver Whitecaps FC History

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974  as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).

Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

  • Great atmosphere and suberb talent!

by rallyfan on 2012-03-12BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

The new BC Place is fantastic! Even our $30 seats were up close to the action! Great fun and lots of energy from the Southsiders! I highly recommend for everyone! Perfect for kids.

  • Whitecaps Home Opener - just Killin it!

by thisismatty on 2012-03-12BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

After the Whitecaps home opener last year vs Toronto at Empire field I knew I had to be back for this one vs Montreal! And what a great game it was. With my crew from Kelowna we made the trip down to BC place for what was a stellar environment for the Whitecaps first win of the season. The stadium and pre game performances were great and the only thing that could improve was to have the entire stadium exude the energy like the Southsiders and other fan groups across from us. I wasn't quick enough on the draw to get those seats but we had awesome seats and I'm looking forward to the next game for sure! Cheers

The game was a lot of fun, seats were great, but it was a little cold-will dress warmer next time.

  • Good game, but not family friendly

by mystgal on 2011-10-25BC Place - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

We enjoyed the game, but did not enjoy some of the language or the lack of respect for others.

  • Whitecaps

My first Whitecaps game, totally enjoyed it. I'm sure there will be more in my future.

  • I'll be back

by steveie on 2011-10-24BC Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

good guys lost, but partly because of the ref. I See potential for more wins next year, and I will be there.

  • Not their best game ever!

by RoarULions on 2011-10-24BC Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

The game was a little slow but not a terribly exciting game. It was the last game of our package and players of the team signed my daughters jersey and scarf (that she won at a Whitecaps camp) so it made it all worthwhile for me! Thanks for great entertainment and making my daughters weekend!

  • Sections to avoid

by Glynnis on 2011-10-24BC Place - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

We were on section 248, which is considered to be far away already from the Southsiders. But there were a handful of drunk guys who were standing in front of us all throughout the game!!! Families including us, who brought kids could not get a full view of the game. One mother with kids attempted to ask the guy on section 248 row D to no avail and ended up getting shouted at. So they moved to unoccupied seats farther up. Would not recommend sections between 242-252 especially if you're bringing your kids!!!

  • Whitecaps game at BC Place was fabulous!

by sjabjl on 2011-10-24BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Loved the game...very exciting...great venue...short line ups for food and beverages...blown away by the beauty that is now BC place...Whitecaps, althought they lost, played really well with a number of moves that had the audience captivated! We would definitely attend another Whitecaps game...sad the season had to come to an end!

  • Barcelona student impressed!

by Risachan on 2011-10-15BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

We are a family of four with 2 boys aged 15 and 12 years old. Both boys play soccer and have for many years. We are hosting a 15 year old boy from Barcelona, Spain who is a huge soocer fan and he was really impressed, as we were. The entire experience was great from the ticket purchase, to the activities on the plaza, to the concession and the on-field game with the big screen. Our guest tried the Sport Chek ball juggling challenge and topped the list with 109 volleys of the ball without dropping it. We haven't heard if he won, but it was fun! The Whitecaps even won the game - wow! Now the boys want to go to the next game, the last home game.

  • Great game, obnoxious fans

    by mclean25 on 2011-10-14BC Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

The game was great, the arena was great, the only complaint I have is people standing up for the entire game right infront of you. There needs to be a section where for everyone that wants to stand up they can go to that section, just like in Europe.

  • Amazing experience

    by HenryHoo1 on 2011-10-08BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing to experience the first home win, great atmosphere with the South Siders in full song and to see it all from the Loge seats, best seats in the house, a memorable occasion!

  • by Anonymous on 2011-10-08BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

The atmosphere at the game is awesome... The fans are all into the action and you are so close to the game

  • Bell Pitch grand opening

by vande on 2011-10-04BC Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

well presented stadium. somewhat pricey food and beverage. on field performance by the Caps was not stellar but had it's moments.

  • by capsfan on 2011-10-04BC Place - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

had the best time with my son at the game. great stadium.

  • Venue was amzing,,,,Soccer,,,well....

by ezwaan on 2011-10-04BC Place - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

The venue was worth the price of the ticket, i would definately recomemnd any event in BC place to any one. As long as the big money is payd for soccer players over in Europe, we will have to deal with han me downs here in North America.

  • Good game, overwhelming fans

by electraman on 2011-09-26Empire Field - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

This was my first Whitecaps game and first (and last) time at Empire field. I thought the stadium and field was amazing and wished I could of gone to more events, every seat is close enough to see the action and feel you are part of the game. The Sounders fans were a love/hate thing. I thought they were an amazing bunch of fans with their chants and energy going non-stop all through the game. It was great that they had almost an entire section to themselves and if they were all in there it would be great. Unfortunately many Sounders fans couldn't get into that section and were spread out over the rest of the stadium, and wherever they were, they were standing the whole game. This is what brought the Amazing feel down to an Average feel. In our section there was a group of about 8 guys who REFUSED to sit so matter what everyone around them said. A family behind them had to move in order to see and I don't think the old guy in front of me saw anything of the game at all. They insisted that they were just supporting their team and that everyone else should stand too. Eventually security had to be called and one of the female ushers was able to get them to sit on threat of being kicked out. It all just reeked of arrogance and total inconsideration to everyone around them. It is one thing to stand when something exciting happens but to block the view of 20 paying customers the whole game is just not right. I'll be sure not to go during a Sounders game again, but I do want to see the Caps play again.

  • Exciting but disappointing

by MaestroL on 2011-09-26Empire Field - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

It was an awesome game on Saturday. Very exciting to watch. Unfortunately Whitecaps could not finish enough of its scoring chances. I think the Whitecaps players should remain positive and keep trying hard. Good things will come! The Seattle Sounders are a good team with a great fan base. It was a very entertaining evening. Keep working at it, Whitecaps!
