Vancouver Whitecaps FC History
The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974 as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).
Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

certainly can see why the Whitecaps do not have a winning record. they do not play as a team. Houston was a solid team and if it wasn't for our goalie, it would have been another loss. atmosphere at Empire Field was great.
Nice Whitecap experience catching the afternoon tilt at Empire vs Houston. Surprisingly young and enthusiastic crowd took in a 1-0 Van win. You don't want to be sitting on the east side of the pitch during a warm afternoon game as I assume everyone over there was totally melting. First paid soccer game ever and was surprised how many chances there was as well as the songs and chants that went on during the game. I recommend!
Great game. It was wonderful to see the Whitecaps win against Houston. It was a lively and exciting game. The feeling inside the stadium was fun and friendly - suitable for our family outing. However, parking and traffic was difficult around the stadium. Once we finally got the car parked we were then faced with a 10 minute line-up at the northeast gate just to get into the stadium. The line-up was because there was a single person scanning the tickets and then at least 4 people checking the few people who brought bags. If 2 or 3 people were scanning tickets the line-up would have been negligible. Room for improvement!!
Knowledgeable fans, great atmosphere, unbelievable weather and a win for the Whitecaps!!! Couldn't ask for anything more.
It was an excellent game, fun in the sun with great seats too! The Whitecaps scored 4 times and it was probably their best game of the season
I really enjoyed going to this game.I can not wait to go to more whitecaps games.
We had guests in town and decided to take in the Whitecaps game. We all had a great time. To start, the weather was perfect, and the game itself was very entertaining, with the results ( 4-2 Caps ) being most positive. The atmosphere and turnout was excellent, A good crowd, boisterous at the right times, lots of good energy . Empire firld and the 'production' for the game was 1st class, we will be attending the Seattle game soon, and I am looking forward to it very much!
It was my very first Vancouver Whitecaps soccer game and it was great. the fans were all into it, and to see them win for the first game I was at was a score. I would recommend anyone who is into soccer or who has never scene a game to go check it out.
Went with my hubby and 2 kids aged 5 and 8. We had a lot of fun! Spectators around us were great; very friendly and showed a great deal of respect and courtesy for the team and their fellow spectators. I would say this is a very family-friendly activity and the Whitecaps played one of their best games this season.
The game was great, the weather was wonderful and the sound when everyone started pounding their feet in the metal bleachers was amazing. throw in the fan zone with their cheers and it made for a great if not entire rated G experience
Good 1st half for the caps but 4-0 by full time. Good fan support with no Beckham. So the caps sold a lot of tickets in anticipation of Beckham then he was yellow carded in a previous game so couldn't play against the caps. So why couldn't the guy show up to the game and wave to the crowd and sign a few autographs!? To big of a star to be bothered to return the fan support I guess huh!?
It would be nice to see Whitecaps win more often than 1 game. They have no enthusiasm and need to show more energy.
I thoroughly enjoyed the game even though the whitecaps lost. It was a great atmosphere throughout the entire game. The whitcaps are only gonna get better down the road.
I decided to treat my family to the game for the first time so I bought 7 tickets and costs me ~ $ 300.00. I thought I would demonstrate my community spirit. The first half of the game was entertaining as Whitecaps almost scored first. However the rest was a disaster as there were no effective offense; the passing were poor and the high balls were not effective at all. I would not attend future games unless the Whitecaps improves. I will watch it on TV and save my self lots of money.
beautiful day great atmosphere could not bebetter, except a goal would have been great. The "turf" seemed to drag the ball at times not sure why unless too much of the black rubber stuff? Ah but the challenge being only 1-0 down to the Galaxy was the "ify" call of the penalty yet the assistant ref on the clear side did not raise his flag how the ref saw the a clear cut penalty hmmmm? Mind you the arm movememnt is not a good thing in the 18 yard box defensive play would be to head it out. This call gave a definitive deflation to the whitecaps moral and poor positioning by our goalie was not good for both #3 and #4. Considering the possesion and play in the first half the final score was really a surprise to the game in whole. If only the shot that hit the post had gone in before they were down 1-0 could have been a diferent game, if only! Oh well still a whitecaps fan but we have to score goals. its ok to shoot outside the box no need to do a Brazil thing and walk the ball into the net. Good passing though keep up that part of the possession football .
Would have like better ticket selection options, you should show the actual seats on a pop up window rather than just a section. Also related to seats if you showed what seats were available I would have split the party up to sit closer to the action.
As a soccer fan i'll always follow great games/teams specially if they're here in Canada. Going to see this game was a great experience as i got a taste of english fans right here at home.
Packed house was good to see. Hot weather got comfortable very early with a nice breeze. View from corner was good and at least we saw all four goals.
My sons and I mostly enjoyed the Whitecaps - Galaxy soccer game on Saturday. The enthusiastic sell-out crowd responded boisterously to their home team's exciting, competitive play and excellent scoring chances--that is, for the first 60 minutes. After Landon Donovan's pair of goals opened the scoring however, the collective mood dropped significantly. The lack of David Beckham and Whitecaps "finish" were the only causes of disappointment. We traveled 5 hours from out of town to see the game and left feeling somewhat cheated but with really no one to blame. My one complaint would be the crowded conditions surrounding the vendors at half-time. It was literally hard to move--I finally gave up looking for a hot dog and squeezed my way back to the bleachers. Thank you to the staff at Empire Stadium for fostering a safe, family friendly atmosphere.
