Vancouver Whitecaps FC History

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have only joined MLS in 2011 (alongside the Portland Timbers), but the team has a long history in the Pacific Northwest. The Whitecaps first launched in 1974  as a member of the now-defunct North American Soccer League and moved to the Canadian Soccer League in 1986 as the 86ers. The team would remain as the 86ers until 2000 when the Whitecaps name resurfaced as part of the A-League, which would later become the United Soccer League (USL).

Finally, on March 18, 2009, the Whitecaps were introduced as the newest franchise in MLS, where they would keep the Whitecaps name as part of the United States' top division. The club qualified for their first playoff run in 2012, becoming the first Canadian MLS franchise to do so. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have claimed the Voyageurs Cup at the annual interleague Canadian Championship in 2015, 2022, and 2013 and count 2013 MLS Golden Boot winner Camilo Sanvezzo among their alumni.

  • Whitecaps are TERRIBLE!!!

    by SGirl10andMikey5Ms on 2011-08-01Empire Field - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

Can't score when they have chances and when they make a mistake, boom, it's in the net. This happens just about every game. The early season promise is long gone. Southsiders need to become better cheer leaders and come up with more songs and chants. Go to a Sounders game and see their fan club doing wonderful things to encourage their fans. Regrettably, a Sounders game is a far better experience than a Whitecaps game. Can the fans come up with something better than "White", "Caps" from the opposite sides of the field? It's LAME!!!!! Can the Whitecaps management do something more to make attendance at a game a more entertaining experience? The Canucks do!

  • Great place to see a great game

by CRMaximus on 2011-07-27Empire Field - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

It was incredible to see a top level English Preirship team in such an intimate setting. And it was a great game, despite the Whitecaps loss. There were some turf issues, and lots of second stringers in the second half, but a very enjoyable experience overall.

  • First Whitecaps Game Ever!

    by whitecapsfan016 on 2011-07-22Empire Field - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

It was my first Whitecaps game ever and it was the best. The stadium and the crowd was great. Would love to see it again!

  • Awesome game

    by Fernando09 on 2011-07-21Empire Field - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

It was worth the trip; my team is another one but i appreciate the game enough to go see world class teams when they come to Canada, so hopefully some will come to my city (Edmonton)

  • Man. City soccer team did not play their stars :(

by Kodak on 2011-07-21Empire Field - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

The excitement and the game was fun. Really disappointed Man City did not play any of their first string players...that's what we paid ten times more to see. Next time we will pass on the big hype and play regular price to see great soccer. Live and learn. False advertising in my opinion!

  • Great evening at Empire Pitch

by RochatRules on 2011-07-21Empire Field - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

We took our daughter to see the star athletes from ManCity. The game had a lively and exciting atmosphere. I think the ManCity players were impressed with the good sportsmanship of the fans - we even cheered for their teams' goals. We bought a match pack of 5 games this year and we will continue to participate in these events. Very good value for a professional sporting event.

  • Glad to see the England Stars

    by Mok3ys on 2011-07-21Empire Field - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Honestly it was an experience of a lifetime, getting to see stars from the English Premier League - who to this day I have only watched and admired on the television (even though they were a bit out of form). The atmosphere at the stadium was great and was much improved from my memories of Swanguard.

  • First time to empire field!

by Laneykins on 2011-07-20Empire Field - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

This game was awesome to watch and the stadium is unbeatable. Roller coasters in the background - where else would you see that?? and the arrangements for transit with the special busses running from the skytrain stations was really well done, not too long waits for a crowd of 24,000. The venue was clean and lots of bathrooms too.

  • We need a proper grass field

by portomoody on 2011-07-20Empire Field - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

The temporary grass field was atrocious and made it difficult for both teams to achieve their full potential. It was frustrating watching them slip and fail to get solid footing to change direction or anchor themselves to make long accurate passes. I had hoped when they originally put together Empire Field it would be a proper grass field and not a plastic pitch. Rather than move to BC Place and another plastic pitch I would rather watch them at Empire Field with a proper grass surface or even back in Swangard that would result in fewer physical strains on their knees and fewer injuries. I know Owen Hargreaves couldn't last on the current pitch.

  • Whitecaps are always great to watch

by Smackman on 2011-07-20Empire Field - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

This game was played well on the whitecaps side. They proved time and time again that they had what it took to get behind Man. City lines and push one of the best clubs in the world to it's limits. Whitecaps shocked me, not only did they score against Man. City, but was up on the scoreboard first. Camilo and Hassli proved again and again that their Dribbling skills could easily out manoeuvre the Man. City defence. Nolly put on an amazing show as well. He showed that he could stop the attacking force and made beautiful saves all night. A great match to watch, great skills and amazing plays on both sides.

  • Whitecaps vs Manchester City

by Soccerchic on 2011-07-20Empire Field - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Game awesome, atmosphere amazing, seating was disappointing due to a huge column next to our seats. We were nice and close to the field, just could not see some of the play. Did not know this when buying on ticketmaster.

  • First class Football

by Soccerfamily on 2011-07-20Empire Field - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Monday night's Manchester City match was a first class affair. Well run evening, lots to see and do, for example photos with the FA Cup. The match itself was exciting to watch with the Whitecaps putting forth an excellent effort. We look forward to future international friendlies.

  • Friendly Entertainment

by MrReality on 2011-07-20Empire Field - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

The Caps and Manchester City played a very entertaining friendly match. City does a great job of ensuring that the game was evenly played and did not try to make the Caps look bad. That said, let no one doubt that City were 'playing down' to the Caps level of play. Only at the very end of the game did City show a few moments of what they are really capable of and totally dominated play - which they could have done for the entire game otherwise. The match was great fun despite the deplorable field conditions. Why oh why can't Vancouver have a decent grass field for our professional football team. If they can play football on grass in an English winter why can't we have a decent grass field? The Caps did an excellent job preparing the field given our unseasonable weather. I took several friends who will be purchasing Caps tickets for future games now that they have seen them play against their 'old country' favorites. I would go again if they were playing against City in the future.

  • Caps vs City

by RayMooley on 2011-07-20Empire Field - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Overall a great event. Fans were in good spirits. Weather cooperated. Pitch looked a little iffy but held up due to the efforts from the 'Sod Squad'. Would like to see more events like this in the future.

  • Man City vs Whitecaps

by Skinbob on 2011-07-20Empire Field - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Great spectacle if you are a fan of the EPL and Whitecaps. It was kind of like going to a celebrity golf game - not really expecting to see great golf but wanting to see the "stars". Watching this game and seeing all the players I only get to see early on Saturday mornings from far away England was great. You know if points were on the line we would have seen some different soccer but I am OK with the event as it was. Don't get seats in section 225 past row X for seats 1 thru about 6 as you will be staring at a pole for a portion of the pitch.

  • Whitecaps Games Rule!

by FirstCapsGame on 2011-07-20Empire Field - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Went to my first Whitecaps game with a bit of skepticism...left a major fan. Don't judge soccer by what you see on TV...live, this is a fantastic sport of strategy, skill, execution, passion, and artistry. Definitely going to more games!

  • Was a great game

  • Not worth $70. Go Arsenal

by Anonymous on 2011-07-20Empire Field - VancouverRating: 2 out of 5

Not worth $70. Expected more of a merciless beatdown from Manchester City.

  • Great game, phenomenal organization

by AfricanEagle on 2011-07-20Empire Field - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Coming from overseas we were a bit anxious about going to a huge event, worrying about parking, masses and most importantly security. We found parking easy, the masses were controlled effectively and we did not feel unsafe for a second. The event organization was exceptional ... a big THANK YOU to the organizers and staff at the event. Unfortunately the Whitecaps lost, but both teams presented a phenomenal nail-biting game which all of us enjoyed from the start to finish :)
