About

ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN IN CONCERT:

Formed in the late-'70s wake of punk's first wave, Echo & the Bunnymen forged a unique fusion of post-punk, new wave, and neo-psychedelia that established them as pioneers of a new direction in British rock. Today the band's moody, sophisticated sound is as compelling as ever, and their spellbinding live shows are the perfect place to experience it in the flesh. Whether brooding frontman Ian McCulloch is belting out classics from seminal 1984 album Ocean Rain or performing new material from 2014's Meteorites, Echo & the Bunnymen never fail to mesmerize with muscular musicianship and intense performances on their unforgettable tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Echo & the Bunnymen formed in Liverpool in 1978, taking their name from a list of nonsensical monikers suggested by a friend. The band made their debut in 1979 with "The Pictures on My Wall", released on the now-legendary Mute Records imprint. Their 1980 album debut Crocodiles was a critical and commercial success, cracking the UK Top 20 and setting the stage for the success of sophomore album Heaven Up Here, which reached the Top 10 in 1981. Their chart run continued in 1983 with third album Porcupine, the vessel for hit singles "The Back of Love" and "The Cutter" and predecessor to the band's landmark 1984 album Ocean Rain, widely considered by critics as the pinnacle of their '80s output. After taking a hiatus between 1993-1996 the band reformed with a vengeance, scoring another Top 10 hit with "Nothing Lasts Forever" and delivering a powerful series of performances on tour. With their 12th studio album Meteorites hitting shelves in 2104, Echo & the Bunnymen have fans eagerly awaiting their next live shows.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Amazing show. Ian's voice has not changed a bit. The band sounds the same as the first time I heard them. Bravo!"

"The Bunnymen did amazing renditions of their albums. The improvisation on Crocodiles brought back many great live memories of Bunnymen past shows."

"It was an amazing show. The band sounded incredible and Ian was very much a dynamic presence. Two complete albums were played, along with encores, so it was definitely a show to remember."

    Bring on the Dancing Horses!

by CJbass on 2017-08-08Union Hall - Edmonton

The venue was awful. Worst place I've ever seen a live show. But Echo and the Bunnymen made it all disappear with the first song. Ian was ever the New Wave frontman, with his brooding manner, eyes hidden behind dark sunglasses. A rare smile showed adorable dimples, usually accompanied by the laughter of the crowd as we enjoyed a well-placed snippet of humour. We were even encouraged to sing along with a few of our faves, including the namesake to this review. Glad I had the chance to see them, even if it was 30 later than I first wanted! Any Echo fan will thoroughly enjoy the show.

    Bunnymen are Legendary

by landzip on 2016-10-03The Phoenix - Toronto

Excellent show, as usual. Mac's voice was strong and powerful. Sound was great. They are true legends in early Alt Rock. Their latest tunes aren't bad either, although they only played classics at this show. Only complaint was that they didn't get to their second encore and play Ocean Rain. I heard it was due to The Phoenix' curfew. They have to fix this.

    Echo and the Bunnymen

by KiloFoeHammer2014 on 2014-08-16The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

We went knowing only three songs. They played only 2 but from what little we know the band played amazing songs from the beginning to the end. They made up to the bad experience my brother and I had at the New Order concert. We would love to see them again and hope the band keeps coming back every year. What an experience; fans forever. Thank you Echo boys

    The Bunnymen were Great!

by AcidJazz on 2014-08-16The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Great Show! The sound at the Danforth was fantastic. It's becoming one of my Fav venues in the city. But they need to do something about the heat! It was unbearably hot on the floor. Very uncomfortable.

Echo & The Bunnymen at DMH, Toronto

by Pacemaker on 2014-08-15The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Ian McCulloch was in top form, singing his heart out at the Danforth Music Hall on Aug. 12/14. He even chatted up the crowd, which is not like him, thanking the fans for allowing the band to keep making music after all these years. He said he used to hate singing some of the old songs, but now he realizes they're our songs, too. I loved that! The Grinch is growing a heart! Loved the new material and danced like a maniac to the old material. GREAT SHOW!

    Echo did not dissapoint!

by warlock on 2014-08-15The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

This my first time to see them and I am a big fan of many 80's bands. So many times these bands are either arrogant or annoyed about playing the old songs. There is that understanding that they will play new songs of new albums, and as a fan you understand. But they wasted no time in dipping into the hits. They played so many of their great songs and seemed really to get into it enough that you did not feel like they were going through the motions. Ian is not lively on stage and God bless but when he talks no one has a clue what he is saying, but he seemed very passionate about those songs as I had hoped he would. I was so very pleased and I would see them again without a doubt.

Echo & The Bunnymen = Awesome!

by aeroplanext on 2011-05-18The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

I really enjoyed the show! The stage lighting was a bit dark at times, but the performance was incredible. Ian McCulloch's a bit of a mumbler in between songs, but is crystal clear while singing. His Sean Penn impersonation needs a little work though.... If you can - go see this show!

    ECHO were FANTASTIC !!!

by NAILHEAD on 2011-05-18The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

The Phoenix was the perfect venue to see Echo & the Bunnymen, cozy, great sound, plus it was a 19 plus show, so you had no kids flying through the air trying to impress their friends. I arrived early to get a primo spot up front and to my surprize, Minister Tony Clement was in line in front of me. From the opening song of Going Up, Echo brought me right back to the 80's. They put on a great show, playing all the songs from their first two albums. Had a great time and will go back to see them again !!

The band sounded great but it was a somewhat lacklustre stage show. It was a good trip down memory lane.

by landzip on 2010-09-06The Phoenix - Toronto

This concert was great. The sound was excellent. The Bunnymen still know how to perform. At times, the show was very moving. Can't wait to see them again. Hopefully, Mac comes out and signs some autographs for the fans who were waiting for a couple of hours after the show.

    Echo

by MiiM on 2010-04-24The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

One of the best concerts ever. Saw them in London and thought the show was great. This was just as good. Whoever does their sound engineering at the shows is a genius. It's loud but crisp. Not all muddy like some shows. The band is tight and the vocals are some of the best of heard. Top 10 for sure. And the Phoenix is a great venue. Sound is good. It's just small enough. Very cool.
