Chicago just gets better all the time!
by BaguioFan on 2010-08-30River Rock Casino Resort - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5The acoustics at the River Rock Theatre made for really tight sounds from the horn section--awesome! Walter Parazaider, Lee Loughnane and company looked like they were having so much fun, but amid all the exuberance they wowed the audience with their expert playing. Chicago just gets better and better all the time!
The playlist included excellent choices of classics from the 70s that reminded me why I started listening to Chicago as a teenager growing up in the Philippines. To me, it was magical when our airwaves would play "Beginnings," "Happy Cause I'm Going Home," "Dialogue," "All is Well," "Saturday in the Park," "Call on Me," and "Wishing You Were Here." Growing up with the sounds of those horns and harmonies (and other groups of the time) influenced my musical tastes forever.
Throughout the evening, there were chances to rediscover the brilliance of some compositions whose value have stood the test of time. Maybe the advantage of getting older is that when we hear compositions like "Ballet for a Girl from Buchannon" by Jimmy Pankow, we can appreciate the arrangements written into each movement and the intricacies of each player's performance on the trumpet, flute, sax, or trombone. Robert Lamm's keyboard solo on "Colour My World" reminded me of my early teens when that was "THE song" to learn on the piano. The lyrics of "I've Been Searching so Long" make more sense to me now than they ever did before. Aside from all these serious thoughts, It was just so great to hear the energy in a song like "Mongonucleosis" again!
Also, the show wasn't just a plain old list of "revivals" of old formula hits. There were variations and twists in the performances that kept a newness about the songs. For example, "Colour My World" took on a fresh sound because of Lee's vocals. I think the power in Lou Pardini's voice on "Dialogue" adds a very welcome edge to the harmonies, which were amazing from start to finish.. Jason's singing was way clearer at the River Rock than it was several years ago at GM Place in Vancouver. The combinations on the back-up vocals blew me away.
Bravo to the whole band and Robert Lamm on "Beginnings." That piece is one of my long-standing favourites, with its opening guitar chords, harmonies, and brass backbone. In fact, when the last note of that song died out and the audience cheered, I almost thought it would be so natural if Robert Lamm and the band could just play it all over again!
It was an evening of rich sounds, infectious joy, and whether you were seated and clapping along to the beats or dancing in the mosh pit, the delight and energy which the music brought was unmistakable.
That concert left me feeling thankful for the music I have listened to in my life. I wouldn't change a thing about the times I've grown up in and the places I've been. Thanks Chicago, for sharing your love for music and your joy with us all these years on our journeys. Keep taking care of yourselves, and here's to many more!
