About

Death Cab for Cutie was formed in Bellingham, WA in 1997 and almost immediately entered the ranks of the era's definitive bands, fueled in large part by the remarkable power of co-founder, lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Benjamin Gibbard's complex, often bittersweet songcraft. The band made their worldwide popular breakthrough with 2003's RIAA Platinum certified Transatlanticism, later named by NPR as one of "The Decade's 50 Most Important Recordings." Plans, their 2005 Atlantic Records debut, saw Death Cab for Cutie ascending to even greater heights, earning RIAA platinum certification and a GRAMMY® Award nomination for "Best Alternative Album" while spawning the chart-topping singles, "Soul Meets Body," "Crooked Teeth," and "I Will Follow You into the Dark," the latter of which was honored with a GRAMMY® nod for "Best Pop Performance By Duo Or Group With Vocals."

  • 3 time just as good as the first!

Death Cab blew my mind again, This was the third time I had seen them and they haven't disappointed me yet!

  • Death Cab Deadly

by HennyPenny on 2011-07-31Molson Canadian Amphitheatre - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

If you cared to listen to lyrics, forget it. Most songs were a muffle at best . While the weather outside was delightful, I'd say the band was a bit frightful. Pulease - get a hair cut! Aren't we past swinging around a mop head for effect? They could have a good sound - in fact, the warm up band was decent but again, muffled - but acoustics are either an issue with Molson or the singers themselves. I love MOlson Amphitheatre and have fond memories of summer concerts there. This wasn't one of them.

Frightened rabbit and death cab? What's there no to like!

Had a great time! Ben is a perfectionist and restarted a song when the snare wasn't working right. Good mix of new and old songs. Show began at ticket time - which is not common.

Frightened Rabbit opened up and they were great! Love their sound and their accents!! Death Cab was absolutely great! They sound so good live....just like listening to them on the radio. Loved their down-to-earth disposition and performance! Great time with my son!

  • The Ego-less

by calgarygirlmusiclover on 2011-06-01Stampede Corral - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

I'll be honest I am not the biggest Bright Eyes fan. For a lot of people that is what sold them on this concert. But for me it was all about Death Cab. I actually am one of the original OC fans and when Seth Cohen kept going on about 'Death Cab for Cutie' I decided if I was to marry him in the future I better figure out what on earth he is taking about. Then Death Cab for Cutie entered into my life. And I don't think my Jr or Senior High school would have been the same without the intoxicating sounds of the lovely Death Cab. I still remember the first song that took me over, "What Sarah Said", along with the ever popular "A Lack of Color". Since then "Cath..." and "The Sound of Settling". Seeing this band live was a long time wish for me and did they ever deliver! Watching them play these song I couldn't help but think, "These guys have no ego! It's just them rocking out, playing their songs, and we happen to be lucky enough to watch and experience it all." And that's not to say that they didn't interact with us, everyone had a good time. Especially when "I Will Follow You Into The Dark" was played and Calgary was mentioned, the song even slowed for everyone to get out their hoot and holler for our town. I will have to disagree with Ben Gibbard, lead singer, when he mentioned that he dislikes when bands or artists throw the current city's name into a song. "Once in a while it actually happens" he said. But I am a complete sucker for it. To me it becomes more special just for that city. I imagine it gets difficult even remembering where you are when you start touring for months at a time. This show felt magical to me though. I mentioned to my friend that Death Cab had this way of taking you over, and did from the first moment they came on stage to the end of Transalanticism. It was a pleasure Death Cab for Cutie, I shall be listening to your new cd for the next month and hope to see you again soon.

Awesome band. Great tunes. The Shaw isn't my favorite venue. It is too big for me. However, with a big band such as Death Cab, a large venue is inevitable.

This was an incredible show, Ben sounds CD quality with his singing at all times. I would highly recommend this show to anyone.

I thought the set list was perfect; however, either the bass was too high or the vocals were too quiet, we couldn't hear much from where we were sitting.

  • Amazing concert!

by gojustine on 2011-05-29Stampede Corral - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was so good! I've wanted to see them for years now and it was totally worth the wait. If you get the chance to see them live, do it!

  • Death Cab was Death Row!!!

    by JayPee74 on 2011-05-29Stampede Corral - CalgaryRating: 1 out of 5

Death Cab is one of my favorite groups. Love the Gibbstack, but playing in this venue was a bad decision. Left a bad taste in everyone's mouth that I talked to. SOund in that building and the sound man (whoever that may have been) were terrible. If I didnt know there songs I wouldnt have had a clue, because you could only pluck out one out of every 10 words. Bad bass, bad everything!!! Still an awesome band but, please, if you are coing back, play a venue that is equipped for your sound (ie: Jubilee or Saddledome with someone else?)

  • Death Cab Rocks and Rolls Through the Prairies

by GanderBoy on 2011-05-28Shaw Conference Centre - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Death Cab for Cutie took to the stage of the Shaw Centre in Edmonton, Alberta with gusto on May 24, 2011. They rocked it up with tunes like "Crooked Teeth" and "Glove Compartment" and delivered on more haunting tunes like "Grapevine Fires" and "What Sarah Said". They entered the stage triumphantly with the mesmerizing backbeat of their hit "I will possess your Heart". One of the highlights of the show was Benjamin Gibbard's going solo on "I will follow you into the dark". The whole crowd backed him up on vocals, giving a haunting feel to the tune as a crowd of late teens and twenty-somethings sang about the pain of losing their loved one to death. Unfortunately, a few less than enlightened fans booed when he mentioned Calgary. Did they really think he'd change it to Edmonton? It would have been tacky, something beyond a band that seems dedicated to their craft. The only sour note, was the sound crew, who sacrificed quality for volume. At times the melody of vocals and guitar were completely lost behind a pounding morass of distorted bass and drums. This was particularly troublesome when the band tried to share material from their new album. Visually, the presentation was stunning. At times the group appeared as phantoms, dancing in front of a dizzying array of colour in motion. The ended the show with "Transatlanticism", almost taunting the crowd with the words "I need you so much closer" as they exited the stage. Let's hope they stay close enough to Edmonton to consider coming back again.

  • Too bad about the sound

DCfC did their best, but the sound in there was horrible.

  • Beyond my Expectations

    by 12345678910 on 2011-05-28Stampede Corral - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

My first experience to see Death Cab. Great sound, great background effects, great light. I have always admired the vocals of Ben Gibbard, he has a voice so distinctive and clear. The band sounded so sync and flawless. I was stoked about the overall sound they unfolded at the venue. I would definitely attend another Death Cab show without a doubt. I especially loved how they came out and rocked my world for the night. They played a lot of songs in the amount of time on stage, new and older songs.

Low Energy - not much stage presence, shaw is not the Ideal concert location for this band.... But they did play well and sound just like their recorded album.

Great show!! Bright eyes needed a bit longer of a set, missed some of my fav songs.

  • Death cab needs more concert abilities.

by mambotriana on 2011-05-27Stampede Corral - CalgaryRating: 2 out of 5

This concert really was lacking energy. They have great music but they are not great as expected in concert.
