Death Cab for Cutie was formed in Bellingham, WA in 1997 and almost immediately entered the ranks of the era's definitive bands, fueled in large part by the remarkable power of co-founder, lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Benjamin Gibbard's complex, often bittersweet songcraft. The band made their worldwide popular breakthrough with 2003's RIAA Platinum certified Transatlanticism, later named by NPR as one of "The Decade's 50 Most Important Recordings." Plans, their 2005 Atlantic Records debut, saw Death Cab for Cutie ascending to even greater heights, earning RIAA platinum certification and a GRAMMY® Award nomination for "Best Alternative Album" while spawning the chart-topping singles, "Soul Meets Body," "Crooked Teeth," and "I Will Follow You into the Dark," the latter of which was honored with a GRAMMY® nod for "Best Pop Performance By Duo Or Group With Vocals."

Death Cab put on an awesome show and an even better encore. Transatlanticism is the absolute best song to finish the evening with!
I have seen other concerts in the Corral and they have been fine sound wise. Bright eyes was great! Death Cab the sound was really off. It was hard to enjoy the music when the mix was totally off. Also it seemed like Death cab wasn't in to it.
They bring a warm fuzzy to your heart and a strong smirk to your face, the mix of old classics with new gems combined to make a memorable evening. This is the third time I have seen Death Cab for Cutie live and they never disappoint.
I've seen them a few times before, and while the other times stand out more, this show was pretty solid. A good selection of songs both old and new. Could have used a bit more crowd interaction.
Death Cab is one of my favourite bands so I was more than thrilled to hear they were coming back to Calgary. Unfortunately, the show was less than stellar. I've been to other shows at the Stampede Corral so I can't say for sure if it was the venue itself, but the sound quality was awful! There was far too much bass which overshadowed Ben Gibbard's vocals, making a number of songs unrecognizable. If I didn't already know the lyrics to most of the songs I would have had no idea what they were singing. It's a shame that poor acoustics in the venue turned what could have been an otherwise awesome show into a forgettable one. I hope that next time Death Cab comes to town they will be able to play somewhere else.
What a wicked show. Like the new material but you can't beat the Plans.
It was absolutely incredible, everyone needs to go see this concert.
Not so good. I thought I was a bigger fan. When I saw them in 2006 it was a better show, better stage. I guess it was their height and the height of emo and maybe my tastes have changed. Still like their old stuff and it's great music to drive and walk to work to. It was also not the best to hear so many new songs before the cd was released. It would have been nice to know those a little better. Not to self, don't start a tour until the new cd is released.
Love, love, loved it - such a fantastic live show!!
Death cab was awesome! However, the sound was poor. Such a shame for such a great band :(
Great show, didn't enjoy bright eyes tooo much. my onlyy complaint is that hipsters dont know how to move at a concert ahah
Overall, a good show. I really didn't like Bright Eyes - I felt it was all noise and distortion, and the music didn't shine by any means. However, Death Cab for Cutie more than made up for it with their excellent playlist choice and stunning light displays. Oh, and not to mention, they didn't make my ears bleed by the end of their performance.
Death Cab for Cutie definitely know how to put on a show! Their live show was simple, lacking in expensive pyrotechnics and allowed the crowd to truly appreciate the poetry of the music and the lyrics. They didn't spend a lot of time talking in between songs, which allowed the crowd of fans to soak in every moment of the show. This also allowed them to play a lot more songs from their extensive song catalog. They played a nice selection of songs that included all of their major hits and a handful of new songs from their upcoming album, Codes and Keys. It was really unforgettable to see the whole crowd singing along to I Will Follow You in the Dark without the band encouraging the crowd to sing along. I will definitely be going to see them again in the near future. The only complaints that I had about the concert was the waiting time and the set up. Bright Eyes started playing 1.5 hours after the time listed on the ticket. I also found that the seating area was uncomfortable. The seats were positioned perpendicular to the stage (similar to a debate) with the sound and lighting booth in the middle and the main stage off to the side. This made it uncomfortable, since you had to angle your body the whole time in order see the stage.
The concert was so good, I felt like bright eyes was a little too loud, but death cab was the perfect volume. Because their album doesn't come out till next week they weren't necessarily tied to one album. This meant they could play whatever they wanted, and they did, and we loved it!
I feel like this show was the real kick-start to the concert season this year. It had all the elements that I look for in a really good show. These elements are: vocals, band, sound quality, lights, and audience. I'm not saying that every one of these elements were perfect in this show, because they weren't. But boydid I enjoy it! Ben Gibbard's voice was one of the aspects of this show that was completely flawless. He sang with passion and conviction. This is more than I can say for the other band members. It seemed like they were hidden in the shadows for the entire show (literally! All of the lights were focused on Ben). My only qualm with the technical aspects would be that I found it to be too loud. Some songs were a bit distorted because of the volume. I loved the variety of songs that they played. In fact, I heard every song that I was hoping to hear (many of which are not singles) and a few new songs from their yet unreleased "Codes and Keys" album. I think the audience really helped this show. They sang along to many songs, interacted with the band and made the show feel much more intimate than it actually was. It was one of those nights when you could feel the music in your bones.
Death Cab: Took about 3 or 4 songs for them to dial in vocals - until then sound was mashed and ambiguous. Then superb. Bright Eyes - great new songs. Three 30-something blondes sitting in the row behind us - I get that it's a loud rock concert, but really, do ya hafta endlessly screech your conversations about your boyfriends or your new purses or whatever while the rest of us around you are trying to enjoy the show? Save it for later. Take it outside, or just shut up.
Death Cab and Bright Eyes were amazing! Love Ben to bits! He is a fabulous!
It was nice to see a band such as Death Cab in an intimate setting....I felt it was up close and personal at the Pheonix Concert Hall. I was actually surprised that a band as popular as Death Cab featured here. I enjoyed every minute and it was great to hear some new songs off their new album. I did miss hearing some of their old stuff from Transatlantism, as this is my fav album
This was an event I was looking forward to since the tickets went on sale. It was my first time seeing Death Cab playing live as I'd missed the last time they were in Toronto. And it's been a long time since I was so disappointed in a gig. I've been to approximately 20 concerts in the Phoenix over the last few years and this was the worst sound quality I've experienced to date. The band gave it their all but the feedback was so bad and certain instruments could barely be heard so that it took a while to recognize what songs they were playing. It won't stop me going to the Phoenix or seeing Death Cab again but it definitely ruined the event for me.
I was amazed by how much effort and energy they put into the show. Chris was hilarious that night and you can tell he is a guitar legend. I would definitely see them for the third time
