About

Death Cab for Cutie was formed in Bellingham, WA in 1997 and almost immediately entered the ranks of the era's definitive bands, fueled in large part by the remarkable power of co-founder, lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Benjamin Gibbard's complex, often bittersweet songcraft. The band made their worldwide popular breakthrough with 2003's RIAA Platinum certified Transatlanticism, later named by NPR as one of "The Decade's 50 Most Important Recordings." Plans, their 2005 Atlantic Records debut, saw Death Cab for Cutie ascending to even greater heights, earning RIAA platinum certification and a GRAMMY® Award nomination for "Best Alternative Album" while spawning the chart-topping singles, "Soul Meets Body," "Crooked Teeth," and "I Will Follow You into the Dark," the latter of which was honored with a GRAMMY® nod for "Best Pop Performance By Duo Or Group With Vocals."

Some definite highlights from the band, such as Transatlanticism (that definitely rocked! I've never seen anyone rage on a set of drums like McGerr did at the end!), and I'll Follow You Into the Dark, but I could have done without a number of songs I have yet to hear from the studio. As for the venue and promoter, I can appreciate that the no ticket thing was to prevent scalping -- for the fans -- but did the promoter really think 2 people with clipboards was the right way to go about that?? Also, I'm getting sick of the venue -- not Death Cab's fault, but all that standing, and muffled acoustics anywhere on the 2nd floor or near the back. I wonder what the Phoenix thinks it contributes to fans' experiences?

  • DCFC after waiting for 7 years to see them live

by kooltothekore on 2011-05-20The Phoenix Concert Theatre - TorontoRating: 4 out of 5

Pro: Sounded just like the albums and I loved it!! Great performance!! Cons: waited WAY too long at the theatre for will-call, the tall people on the floor all clumped in the middle so I could barely see anything, everything sounded 100% like the albums and frankly I can listen to that at home...

Fantastic - Great to see them in a small setting bar venue!

  • Love it

by Moezus on 2009-11-24Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

As usual these guys are a blast! though the new pornographers were ok alot better then last time i saw them cause they were totally out of time. I've seen both twice, the first was at Sasquatch festival which is what really got me into them. Death cab put on a solid show with an amazing encore with very few mistakes. I love them cause their storytelling in very well put together!

death cab was very good for the 20 minutes or so that they played. It was the only time that a band at edgefield that was done before the sun went down. If I ever run into any of the band on the street i'm going to ask for my money back.

  • Death Cab for Cutie Concert Vancouver, BC

    by BC2Blog on 2009-07-27Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Ben Gibbard and company took the stage at the Coliseum in Vancouver, BC on Thursday July 16 for a fantastic night of thirty-something angst. They enthusiastically played their hits from previous albums and new songs from their latest EP, The Open Door. Ben's constant swaying to a different rhythm than laid down by band mates Nick Harmer (bass) and Jason McGerr (drums) somehow kept him focused on the music while Chris Walla filled out the wall of sound with layers of guitar and keyboard work. The sparse stage was lit by an excellent light show that moved through waves of primary and secondary colors mixed with islands of white. The audience was fixated on every word and sang along with the band throughout the night. The encore opener of I Will Follow You Into The Dark was reminiscent of a campfire sing-along with 15,000 of your best friends. Personal favorites included Marching Bands of Manhattan, Title and Registration and I Will Possess Your Heart. Another excellent concert in Vancouver and a great way to experience music. • Death Cab was wicked :)

by Krisanna on 2009-07-24Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

The sound was great, Ben Gibbard sounded amazing, the screens behind the stage and the lighting were simple, yet effective. Ra Ra Riot and The New Pornographers were really good as well.

  • Death Cab rocked the park

by sglrd on 2009-07-23Concerts At Marymoor - RedmondRating: 4 out of 5

We got their early enough to have a nice seat for the show. Ra Ra Riot and The New Pornographers did excellent jobs opening up. Death Cab played a great set with good energy. Excellent encore. Drove down from B.C. to see them and well worth it.

  • Better live!

by ashesofroses on 2009-07-21Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Death Cab for Cutie in Vancouver was an amazing show! They kicked off the show with a bang, got the crowd moving and made sure the fans got into it and had a good time. It's awesome to see a band you love live and be even more impressed with them; it makes you realize these guys truly are talented and amazing musicians that can deliver. Little bribes, grapevine fires and I will follow you into the dark were definitely the best. Only criticism was they could have played longer.

  • Death Cab Rocked!

    by Butterfly69 on 2009-07-21Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

They came out after encore and played 3 more songs. They were on time. We got our money's worth out of that deal for sure.

  • Death Cab : Epic Encore!

    by chelsea88 on 2009-07-21Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

I'm a moderate fan of Death Cab for Cutie, I mean, I don't know every song, but I listen to them a few times a week. So I got the tickets for a friend and I to go and it was an amazing show. The best part was the encore, when the entire stadium was singing "I'll Follow You Into The Dark". So beautiful! Would have liked to see it at a better venue though. Not a fan of the Pacific Coliseum

  • Death cab for cutie was incrediable!!!

  • death cab made me cry tears of joy

by megalious on 2009-07-21Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

It was actually the best concert that I have ever witness. Ben Gibbard is a lyrical genius and the performance blew me away

  • More Pornographers!

by thoughtcrimes on 2009-07-20Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

I wish that Carl and co. headlined this show (even without Neko). They played an excellent selection of tunes from Twin Cinema -- "The Bleeding Heart Show'' was excellent as a closer. That being said, they could have been louder and had better lighting. Death Cab were okay. I don't think they know which songs work well with the arena audience. Why save "Follow You Into the Dark" and "Soul Meets Body" until the encore. Ben's banter was homorous, but ironically so -- at least I know now that when the wild fire is coming down on me I should just sit there and sway my hands in peace. Missed Ra Ra Riot.

  • death cab played was so solid!

    by pierre777 on 2009-07-20Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Ra Ra Riot was pretty good, not really mixed well or loud, which was expected for the opening band.so that was rad. the new pornographers were alright, nothing special... death cab came on and I wans't expecting anything spectacular because the sound hadnt been amazing so far in the night..they opened up with 3 old songs and were incredible.. the entire night they played a complete range of their music and had a really good stage presence. it was unbelievable! they then ended off the night with an acoustic "i will follow you into the dark", then "marching bands of Manhattan", and closed the night off with an epic "transatlantisism." The atmosphere was unreal!

  • Excellent Experience

by bluestockings on 2009-07-20Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Death Cab for Cutie put on a very energetic performance in Vancouver. The sound quality was excellent and the band had the audience squeeling with delight as they played the various favourites from their albums. They generously came back on stage for a three song encore after the show at the insistent clapping and stomping by the crowd. The lead singer did a beautiful solo with guitar following which the other band members came back to join him on stage for two more songs. The intro bands also put on excellent performances and the whole concert was a beautiful experience.

  • DCFC was great

by Haedyr on 2009-07-20Concerts At Marymoor - RedmondRating: 4 out of 5

This was my first time seeing them live and it was great. I wasn't expecting much, but I also wasn't blown away. Had a good light show, the sound was great, and the band had great energy. I was a little weirded out by the amount of 14-16 year olds who were at the show. I didn't know DCFC had that sort of following. I would definitely recommend people go out and see them although I think this may have been their last show of this tour.

  • Amazing....

This is my first time seeing Death Cab live and I have to say it was an amazing experience. DCFC's ability to perform live was incredible.

Death Cab was amazing! They were on and feeling the energy from the crowd. It was a shame that the concert wasn't sold out....they rocked!
