About

Death Cab for Cutie was formed in Bellingham, WA in 1997 and almost immediately entered the ranks of the era's definitive bands, fueled in large part by the remarkable power of co-founder, lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Benjamin Gibbard's complex, often bittersweet songcraft. The band made their worldwide popular breakthrough with 2003's RIAA Platinum certified Transatlanticism, later named by NPR as one of "The Decade's 50 Most Important Recordings." Plans, their 2005 Atlantic Records debut, saw Death Cab for Cutie ascending to even greater heights, earning RIAA platinum certification and a GRAMMY® Award nomination for "Best Alternative Album" while spawning the chart-topping singles, "Soul Meets Body," "Crooked Teeth," and "I Will Follow You into the Dark," the latter of which was honored with a GRAMMY® nod for "Best Pop Performance By Duo Or Group With Vocals."

  • Was worth the Wait

by Boot on 2009-07-19Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Shame we got there at the crack of 7pm as we had to endure two hours of 'meh' before Deathcab. However, it was definitely worth the wait as they were fantastic. Minimal background visuals, some questionable dance moves and the least amount of banter I've ever heard at a concert - but the entertainment value was all there. Ben Gibbard's voice is bang on and the band was really tight. You can tell they spend the better part of their lives touring. Streaming from one song to the next in rapid succession, you get your money's worth and more by the set list alone. Good times.

  • I gave Death Cab a try...

    by megana28 on 2009-07-19Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

...and wasn't disappointed! I was impressed by the various stories that each song presented, and wouldn't imagine them any other way than from the voice of the lead singer. His tone/pronunciation is very unique. Overall they put on a wicked show and I would probably go see them again if they returned to Vancouver.

I didn't like the opening bands and was tempted to escape but was overjoyed that I didn't when Death Cab came on. I was delighted with their performance and found that they ACTUALLY sounded better than they do on their CD! Which is amazing. Most live performances are far worse than recorded. The lead singer's voice proved to be great in concert and he even hit the high notes well. Overall an amazing experience.

  • Amazing Deathcab!

by nicknamee on 2009-07-18Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

The show was great! The opening bands were ra ra riot and new pornographers who were pretty good, i didnt know most of their stuff but their music was good!! When deathcab came out it was a lot different. I was on the floor with general admission seating and everyone just pushed forward, got the true concert experience. Everyone was sweaty and hot and dying from thirt and heat but still shouted and sang all the lyrics as hard as they could!! the only thing bad i have to say is that they could have gotten the crowd going a bit more, most of the people there were pretty young and were hesitant to dance around and go crazy like i do but i had a great time i love death cab!!

  • Death Cab For Cutie was alright

by Hannanity on 2009-07-18Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

They are an O.K. band I suppose. In purchasing these tickets I confused my affection for The Postal Service for these guys. I prefer more oomph to my music and I want to see musicianship. You want to see a show with musicianship, go see the Red Hot Chili Peppers or The Foo Fighters - they will blow you away. Death Cab, I'd forgotton about most of the show by the time I reached my car.

  • Death Cab for Cutie is fab!

  • Death Cab brings the Vancouver Coliseum to life

    by cdn3034 on 2009-07-18Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

3 great bands, one unforgettable evening... Ra ra riot opened the evening with a brief but impressive set , followed by the new pornographers - an accomplished local band whose set was good overall but marred by a poor sound-fabulous vocal on 4 tunes by the female keyboard player. Death Cab hit the stage with a dynamic stage presence & great sound. The pacing & performance of their songs was riveting, with the audience joining in on a number of the more popular tunes. Outstanding! This is the 1st time I've seen them, but it won't be the last.

  • New Pornographers ripped it up!

by ajherald on 2009-07-18Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

Ra Ra Riot was excellent, and as expected, so was Death Cab, but for me the highlight was the New Pornographers - it seems that they just get better and better... gotta support this local (Vancouver) band! They don't disappoint!

  • Death Cab For Cutie rocked the Colosseum!

by Maddyyyy on 2009-07-17Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

This was a great show, the 3 bands (Ra Ra Riot, The New Pornographers and Death Cab for Cutie) went together perfectly and all put on a wonderful show. I'd never listened to Ra Ra Riot or the New Pornographers beforehand but will definitely be purchasing albums now :) Death Cab had a wonderful mix of heartfelt ballads mixed with upbeat, catchy and energetic songs. Bottom line: GREAT NIGHT!

  • Pretty Phenomenal Live

Great energy, amazing song writers, captivating voice. Wish they played a few more songs.....

  • Concert was amazing but disappointed with crowd

by snoozer on 2009-07-17Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

Death Cab sounded brilliant! They exceeded my expectations actually. I love absolutely every song from them, lyrically and musically. Although I realize they're not the hardest rockers around, I was disappointed with the crowd. I think I was the only one standing up in my section for a few of the songs. Come on people.........you're at a concert.......get up and sway to the music!! Ah, maybe it was just the venue. I think I would have preferred to see these guys at an outdoor venue like Deer Lake Park or Malkin Bowl. I KNOW they would have rocked the crowd there!

  • Get ready for some waiting!

by MoreDCFCLessOpening on 2009-07-17Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

The show in and of itself was pretty good, the opening acts (there were 2) were fairly decent and Death Cab was amazing, but the 2 opening acts were too long. The show started at 7pm, Death Cab didn't come out until 9:30pm! In between the acts, there were alot of tweaking and setting up, and the coliseum wasn't especially ventilated. Crowd control could have been alot better too ("But this is a show!" just doesn't cut it people, you can't just push people like that, eventhough there's bound to be a little shoving.)

  • DCFC is awesome.

by mintela on 2009-07-17Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

I loved it, simply because they played a lot of their older stuff. As I am a huge fan of Transatlanticism, I found that they played quite a few from this album, so I was satisfied.

  • Death Cab= AWESOME

    by zapt210 on 2009-07-17Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

Show was great once death cab was on stage.... however... took 2 hours of listening to some good and not so good guests before they were up...

  • all three acts great

by retiredrocker on 2009-07-17Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

i enjoyed the show but i was really taken by the first act ra ra riot, thought they should have been the headliner

  • New Pornos & Death Cab are a great combination!!

by ladybaglady on 2009-07-17Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 4 out of 5

I was Surprised that more people didn't know the New Pornographers, they are so talented! Deathcab was brilliant. During the encore Ben played "I will follow you into the dark" solo and accoustic, and that was really special.

  • one of the best concerts I've been to

by doublec on 2009-07-17Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

They Played a really long set - 1.5 hours almost. The sound was very well done, as well as the lighting. They were better in person than on CD.

  • Death Cab is phenomenal.

by lissabug on 2009-07-17Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

While the venue was a little large for such a great band they made it feel very intimate. Ben Gibbard's voice is perfect and the band did a fantastic job. Overall amazing!

  • Awesome show!!

by JTfromWG on 2009-07-17Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time seeing DCFC live and I can assure you it will not be my last! The set was fantastic as they played a great mix of old and new, with most of the songs being their more upbeat ones which kept the crowd dancing in the aisles. The sound was amazing and Ben is a great live singer. I definitely came away satisfied!

  • Ok, But Not Great

    by dc84 on 2009-07-17Pacific Coliseum - VancouverRating: 3 out of 5

I used to be a big Death Cab fan, but I can admit I haven't really paid much attention to them over the last couple of years. I didn't really like their latest album but I decided to go to this show because I knew they'd play some of their older hits. First of all: WAY too many kids. I mean, seriously.. some of these kids couldn't have been older than 10 back when Death Cab was actually relevant. It's not Death Cab's fault, but these kids were irritatingly rude and I struggled to enjoy the show. The show featured two opening bands: Ra Ra Riot; and The New Pornographers. I'm not too familiar with either of them, although I had heard good things about both bands. Ra Ra Riot had a unique instrumentation (which I appreciated), but I wasn't that impressed with their sound (or maybe just their singer). At one point, I thought to myself: this song is good, but I'd like it more without the lyrics. The New Pornographers played a long, drawn-out set which brought my level of enthusiasm down to a critical low. I know they've been around forever and they're a local favourite blah blah blah. But why the Pornographers were opening for a band whose target audience was still in pampers when they formed in the late 90's is beyond me. Bottom line: I now understand why I never bothered to listen to them, and why I probably won't ever again. Death Cab was solid. Their older material is clearly more entertaining and imaginative than their new songs. They saved the old favourites for their encore, which was capped by a pretty epic rendition of "Transatlanticism". It was a good performance - nothing I would write home about, though. Perhaps if they had a more appropriate opening act....
