About

Debuting their second album at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, the whimsical and fiercely nonconformist musical group Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros finished up their 2013 summer tour just in time to prepare for their next circuit in the New Year. Known as much for their relentless concert schedule as their recognizable 60s hippie commune sound, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are reinvigorating the folk rock music scene alongside occasional tour mates, Mumford and Sons. Expressing a positive, love-one-another vibe while exploring self-image in their music, lead singer Alex Ebert (from Ima Robot) and his many merry cohorts put on energetic live shows that feel both intimate and global. This is no doubt thanks to Ebert’s personal journey, which began with the creation of his alter ego, Edward Sharpe, and his pilgrimage from self-indulgent lovesick drug addict to magnanimous creative.

After strapping on the mantle of Mr. Sharpe, Ebert collected childhood friends, musicians and Jade Castrinos, a one-time sweetheart who shares the vocals in the wildly popular single “Home,” among others, and began playing shows in 2007. In 2009, they toured the nation in a white school bus. Now boasting three full-length albums, including “Up From Below,” “Here” and their recent self-titled work, the collective intends to release some B-sides before completing a fourth album. Though fans may have to wait to hear the next selection of avant-garde musical pieces, they can buy tickets to a show that’s almost certainly coming to a city near them soon. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are undeniably unique in appearance, stage presence and sound, and the deliriously happy disciples have an enchanting effect, even when played through car speakers.

The Edward Sharpe albums are incredibly fun to listen to. I was concerned that a stage with 12 people and probably twice as many instruments would be a bit of a mess. I didn't have confidence that the sound engineers could possibly balance them out. Then I was a little worried about Mr. Sharpe himself. He's more than a little erratic. When I first saw him stumbling around the stage I was expecting him to phone it in. It turns it out the magic is effortless. The concert was fantastic. The sound was amazing, the best I've ever heard at the Malkin Bowl. The music was as good and, in some cases, better than the album. It was exciting whenever they brought out a new instrument and the vocals were all great. That random fella who got on stage for "Home" was distracting. Other than that the crowd was consistently good. Jade was feeling the love, for sure, and guy with the sleeveless hoodie got some attention too.

    Surreal Experience

I've never seen a performance or band that connected so well with an audience before. Every song was performed with natural emotion and brilliance. It's very hard not to smile and dance along with Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. I wouldn't miss these guys perform in a million years.

    Steamy Encounter

by Bigtobeh on 2012-06-12Kool Haus - Toronto

Band was tight Singers were sharp (no pun intended). In some songs, the dialogue was a little drawn out, but all in all the group was very good. Koolhaus is the sweatiest concert venue.

Edward Sharpe: Great band, lousy set up

by JohnM on 2012-06-11Kool Haus - Toronto

I enjoyed the ESMZ concert, and have been enjoying their new album for the past few weeks. The show could have been an all time great but the sound was just way too loud and made it unenjoyable after the first few songs. I like loud music, but this was throwing my equilibrium off. It's a shame, because how they entered 40 day dream was so brilliant and really set the pace for a tremendous show. I would recommend the Zeros to the highest degree if their roadies got their stuff together (to be fair, one or two roadies for a 12 piece band is pretty bush league as well).

Most exhilarating experience I've had in a while

by Hammi on 2010-07-31The Phoenix Concert Theatre - Toronto

The show was without a doubt amazing. Their energy was amazing. The crowds energy was amazing and we all just fed off each other. The pacing of the show was perfect and everyone seemed to be on the same page. Definitely a hot and sweaty show with everyone packed in there and dancing, but worth every bit. When Alexander came into the audience the show just went to the next level. The vibe was the most valuable part - something that I've never experienced at that level before. 100%.

    Edward Sharpe delivers the love!

by Sparkyavatar on 2010-06-01Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

I had heard some good things about this band and they delivered a passionate, joyous celebration of music that exceeded my expectations. These muscians are a pleasure to see live, blowing all their recorded material out of the water. Thier performance was full of great whimsy, melodic, southern influenced jams that had everyone bouncing along with Jesus-like hippie frontman Edward Sharpe. I heard elements that reminded me of Phish and even the Beatles at times. They made the crowd feel like we were all a part of a unique experience, which is what makes live shows great. Once they were through their rehearsed material they kept going with some great unfinished songs, directed confidently on the fly by Sharpe. They ended the show by pulling about 40 people onto the stage and inviting everyone to sit down and share the love for some quiet, soulful guiar and vocals. I highly recommend these guys and look forward to their next stop in Vancouver.

    Still whistling this morning

by Nicandky on 2010-06-01Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

What an amazing show. Crazy energy both on and off the stage. They are exactly why you see a live show. Not just playing the music but living it too. They faced a few technical difficulties that broke up the flow of the show but they were awesome at filling in the gaps playing around. Commodore was such a perfect venue for them too. Great great show and another awesome addition to my vinyl collection!

Edward Sharp & The Magnetic Zeros

by Anonymous on 2010-06-01Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

You just don't get to see a show like that much anymore - woodstock meets Zero7 meets ... well Edward Sharp. The lights, the colours, the sounds, the energy. Outstanding. Started out with some hard hitting strong crowd favs, that got the entire room swept up and riding the Edward Sharp train. WHole room bouncing, singing along, clapping, stomping, loving it. Moved into a more improv section - both choosing songs, and playing them. The crowd was so into the show, that they totally got into the more freeform wandering middle section of the set. The sing-a-longs, of which there were many, weren't so much crowd participation, as crowd spontaneous explosions, it was bursting out of people. Loads of jams on simple, but emotional grooves. Just the right length too, not self indulgent. Ended the night with a sit down love in - as you might expect - made everyone feel like they'd been hanging out with the band all night, and also kind of like the whole crowd was in the band. Great job Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros, the very best kind of music and the very best kind of show. Outstanding.
