Minnesota Wild History

The state of Minnesota was without an NHL franchise for seven years after the 1993 departure of the North Stars. That void was filled when the city of Saint Paul landed the Wild as an expansion team in 2000. Hall of Famer Jacques Lemaire took over as the franchise's first head coach.

The Wild advanced to the Western Conference Final in 2003 behind the play of right wing Marián Gáborík, and has gone on to post a winning record in almost every season since. Starting with the 2012-2013 season, Minnesota reached the postseason six consecutive times.

Center Mikko Koivu spent his entire NHL career with the Wild and is the franchise's all-time leader in games played, points and assists. In 2022, the Wild retired Koivu's jersey, the first player in franchise history to have a jersey retired.

  • Everything hockey has to offer was in this game

by Kyzzer19 on 2011-03-23Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing game. Habs pulled out the 8-1 Victory! The game had everything any hockey fan could ever ask for. There was a fight, lots of goals, a penalty shot, and even a hat trick. That is something that not everyone gets to witness. I had never been to the Xcel Center before and I was very impressed. Clean facility, not a bad seat in the house, no huge line ups for food and beverages, just a cool place. Two thumbs up!

  • Minnesota Wild v Montreal Canadiens Mar 20/11

by parker280 on 2011-03-23Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

The Xcel Energy Centre is marvellous. We were very impressed with the venue and the staff were very accommodating. We had brought our aunt to her first Canadiens game (even though she started supporting them when she was 15) on her 80th birthday. She even made her way down to ice lever to be part of the group waiting for pictures at the warm up before the game! She was also thrilled by having her birthday wish on the Jumbotron - she had never had that happen before! It was an amazing game for us (Canadien fans) but I'm sure we would have had a great time no matter what the end result of the game would have been! The only thing that was upsetting was that we were led to believe that there was a casino on the club level and then were told that it was only sponsored by a casino. But all in all it was a great experience!

Very happy that the tickets were so reasonable, only complaint is there wasn't much leg room, seats were close together.

The venue was very nice and our seats were excellent. The actual hockey game itself was a little boring just cause there were not fights and hardly any hitting. But our team won!!

This was my 13 year old sons first NHL regular season game. He truly had a great time watching one of his favorite players in Alexander Ovechkin. An experience I'm sure he'll never forget.

  • Stars @ Wild

by mydallasstars on 2010-04-11Xcel Energy Center - Saint PaulRating: 4 out of 5

Modano's last game was fantastic with a huge win by the Dallas Stars in a shootout. The fans were given a huge treat by Modano who was named the game's 1st star & skated onto the ice after the game ended wearing a Minnesota North Stars jersey. Awesome. The fans showed a ton of class by giving him a minute to 2 minute standing ovation in the 1st period during a TV time out. Great fans, great arena & the employee's were all super friendly & hellpful. Took in the game against the Minnesota Wild and it was worth every penny, not to mention the 14 hour drive to get there! Great venue. Comfortable.
