About

Founded in Melbourne, Australia in 1983, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are one of the most critically acclaimed post-punk bands of the last 30 years. Following the end of their previous group, the Birthday Party, singer-songwriter Cave and drummer Mick Harvey began the Bad Seeds. Initially joined by Barry Adamson on bass and Blixa Bargeld on guitar, the band has seen a number of personnel changes over the years with the one constant being the creative force of Cave himself.
Exploring the themes of love and religion, the band’s debut album, From Her to Eternity, was released in 1984. Featuring a cover of Elvis Presley’s classic, “In the Ghetto,” presented in the band’s inimitable style, the record showcased the deep impact of Cave’s baritone voice. Quickly following second album, The Firstborn is Dead, third release Kicking Against the Pricks saw the band first find fame in the UK and Ireland. Critics also began to sit up and take notice, with Cave’s prose-like approach to songwriting bringing welcome comparisons with Leonard Cohen. This narrative style was seen again on 1986’s Your Funeral…My Trial, before the beginning of a two year break from recording for the band.
Four more albums were released in the early ‘90s in addition to the band making a range of high-profile US festival appearances. The album Murder Ballads, released in 1996, became a critical success for the Bad Seeds and saw songwriter Cave explore two of his favorite themes: death and violence. The album featured vocals from Kylie Minogue on the single, “Where the Wild Roses Grow,” and the success of the song helped make Murder Ballads the band’s best -selling album so far. 1998 saw the release of No More Shall We Part, with further albums Nocturama and Abbatoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus being released in the early ‘00s.
Following a number of sell out tour dates in 2005 and 2006, Nick Cave’s musical achievements and creative contribution saw him inducted into Australia’s ARIA Hall of Fame. Not for the first time in his career, Cave then moved from music to movies, writing both the screenplay and soundtrack for John Hillcoat’s 2012 film, Lawless. Early 2013 saw the release of Push the Sky Away; the band’s first output in nearly five years, it was widely acclaimed by fans and critics alike.

Such a brilliant show. Still thinking about it days after. NIck was mesmerizing, working the stage and crowd. Pure energy and entertainment. A great mix of new, and classic favorites were played. First time they have played in Edmonton, so worth the wait! Want to see them again!

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds @ the Jubilee

by IggyJones on 2014-07-02Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

This show is a must see experience. The auditory & visual presentation shows that this group of performers are a master @ their craft. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds played their best hits & took the audience on an adventure through the best of Nick Cave. It was wonderful to feel the energy build up w/in the band & transferred into the audience like a wave from the ocean crashing into the sand. Reggie the Comedian was also a complementary act to start the show off. We definitely got our money's worth for this experience. As for the seating area... As much as the sound was well presented on the balcony, the visual presentation, due to seating placement, was poor. Even for an above average height person like myself, I was stuck behind another above average height person right I front of my own seat. With this being said, the persons head covered a good 1/3-1/2 of the stage which blocked my view. I realize that this is not the other persons fault, but the poor staggering of seating during the construction of the venue. I personally did not find swaying back & forth to see the show as convenient for myself nor beneficial for anybody else who was sitting behind me. It also didn't help that there's a visible blind spot off the balcony when it comes to 1) Performers walking off stage into the crowd & 2) Audience members standing up & blocking other patrons. Other than that, this experience as a whole, receives a 4 out of 5 star rating.

    Go see Nick Cave!!!!

by Bart416 on 2014-07-01Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

His opening act was pretty good, but Nick DEFINITELY stole the show! His set list went fairly deep into his catalogue and everything was performed incredibly well. Some song were played a bit different than the recordings, which added to the overall performance in my opinion. His stage presence and crowd interaction was phenomenal! And to put a cherry on top of it all, his encore was 4 songs long! Definitely one of the best shows I have ever been to (A close runner up to The Wall Roger Waters Tour).

Might be the best concert we have ever been to. Very intense performance by all, especially Nick and Warren. I expected an excellent show, but not to be completely immersed. The reviews in the Sun and Journal were very good at describing the show. These seats were extra amazing for this show as it was one of the spots Nick came to crawl or jump into crowd, or grasp their hands, or let her feel his heart beat.

Nick Cave creates a mystical atmosphere.

by Ekati on 2014-07-01Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Nick Cave is the most communicative performer I've ever seen. Calling people to go closer to him, touch him, he enjoyed the love and excitement of his audience. He created a romantic yet dark atmosphere. Amazing experience.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds -fascinating showmanship

by Dynomite on 2014-07-01Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

I go to a lot of concerts, and never in my life have I been so intrigued. Nick Cave was like a snake charmer / preacher and I spent most of the evening grinning and grooving in my seat. The way he interteracted with the audience was something I've never experienced. He walked into the crowd, stepping on the arms of chairs to reach more people, having his mic cord stretched out (probably 15 rows into the crowd). Going into the evening, I didn't know many songs but ended up loving them all. I would have liked to hear stuff from "Dig Lazarus Dig". The way the band and vocals would build was mind blowing. The whole band gave me chills. What a storyteller -- excellent show!

Best Concert - A Personal Account

by Campaigner on 2014-07-01Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

"How do you describe the indescribable? "Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds" performance at The Jubilee Auditorium will go down as one of the best acts to ever pull through the venue. Nick, acting every bit the mad preacher called for people to gather close to the stage, and the crowd was glad to oblige him. He clearly was feeding from the crowds energy. It worked, as the entire auditorium was electric. I was tempted to go forward, but I was in perfect position from 13 rows back to become enveloped in Cave's hypnotic hold. During "Higg's Boson Blues", I had the urge to go forth into the throngs of people surrounding the stage. Then I stopped, as Cave was making his way down my row. "Could this be?" I somehow knew he was heading towards me, right in the center of my row. He propped himself up atop the chair backs walking to the middle of the row as people steadied him. It was like a beacon of light had descended upon me as he grasped my outstretched hand. I am still reeling from the warmth and power of the moment...truly unforgettable - (and I'm a guy). That moment, the whole concert was beyond compare. The concert was not full of Cave's best known songs, yet I don't think anybody left disappointed because they didn't hear their favorite song. From the sonic wonder that "The Bad Seeds" unleashed into the newest "Jubilee Street" to the utter hush of the crowd for "God Is In The House", it was a great set. I've seen an enormous number of concerts, and I never thought I could say this about any act in particular, but this was my favorite...ever.

Nick Cave is the Greatest Man and Musician Alive!

by Nizza on 2014-06-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Whether you like Nick Cave or just great music, this is a fantastic opportunity to experience both. I absolutely adore Nick Cave so it was an awesome treat to see him live. However, I'm sure even people not intimately acquainted with his music would greatly enjoy his show. He is unique, talented, charismatic, inspiring, but at the same time just a vulnerable human. It's not just his music, it's his dancing and interaction with the audience that makes the evening memorable. If you can, get a seat on the main floor - he might stop right next to you when he casually strolls along the auditorium. I was ready to jump from the balcony with envy when I saw this! It's hard to explain Nick Cave's magic in words, it has to be lived. This is THE show you have to see.

I'm too old for Nick Cave anymore.

by Anonymous on 2014-06-30Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The worst sound I've heard in the Jube ever ... For both the opening act and Nick Cave. What idiots were working the board that night?! Although I own some Nick Cave albums I heard nothing I recognized before I got up and walked out. I like his ballads and dark stories on CD but the bad sound made the lyrics completely muddy and incomprehensible. And the louder stuff was just too loud for this aged hipster.
