  • Social D. was a good time!

They can still put on an awesome rock show! After playing a long and satisfying set they continued with a great encore!

  • Social D w/ Civet & The Strangers

by Firejackel on 2009-08-19MacEwan Hall - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

Social Distortion @ MacEwan Hall Jul 25/09. Well I missed The Strangers and can’t seem to find any info on the band??? Civet sounded great. Nice to see a band consisting of all woman. It can really change the scene of a show. This was a great act to have along for the tour. I saw Social D in 2006 the last time they were up this way. I was actually quite disappointed last time after it seemed like a very short show on the second night of two shows. I came to this show hoping for a much better presentation and I wasn’t disappointed. Mike seem to be having a great time on stage along with the rest of the band. The guys put a great collaboration of songs together with a set that lasted about an hour and a half.

  • Amazing show

Great Venue. Opening bands and SD were awesome!!!!

  • The only distortion should be Social

by DeadHeadInThePeg on 2009-07-30Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 2 out of 5

Supposed to start at 8. Imagine my surprise walking in at 7:30 in the middle of the Strangers set. Imagine my surprise at not being able to hear myself think. When they were done, I thought this can't get any worse. Until Civet came on. As far as I can tell, they played one song 18 times. The lyrics may have been different, but I couldn't tell. Hey soundman, turn it down. I've been to loud shows: Soundgarden, Sons Of Freedom, Dead Milkmen, Stranglers, Ramones. At least you could hear the instruments and vocals. It was better when Social D came on, but only just better. Most songs when the B3 was being used, it made no difference. I was only able to understand the lyrics because I listen to Social D. Maybe it was just the second balcony, maybe a poor sound system, but the difference between Social D and other "underground rock 'n' roll" bands has always been their melodies and lyrics. When it's difficult to hear either, it's not enjoyable.

  • SOCIAL D ROCKS!!!

  • Social D still alive

by enola on 2009-07-30Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 4 out of 5

After a pair of lackluster opening acts (civet and the strangers), partly due to the bad vocal mixing (you could hardly hear the singers mic) but more or less because no one cared enough about these bands to even watch them, it made for a pretty empty opening experience. The show definately 180'd once social D hit the stage, playing all their hits, spanning 30 years of "undergroung rock n roll", as they put it. It was great to finally see them, and even at 47 years of age, Mike Ness still sounded at the top of his game. Great Job!

  • Social D. Ok for Me

by VernePanache on 2009-07-30Burton Cummings Theatre - WinnipegRating: 3 out of 5

Thirty years on and Mike Ness and his band of confederates still have what it takes to get a rise out of frothing Winnipeg audience. With no new album to promote S.D. had to rely on their sturdy back catalog which was alright for all those only there to hear the proverbial "hits" anyway. Ness himself seemed to be having some sound issues and indeed, overall, the band sounded heavier and lots louder when they played the same venue in April 2007. Oddly, mixed in with the requisite olden times punkers that crawl out of their musty basements just for these kinds of gigs, The Burt was pretty stunk up with what can only be called "jocks". Now I ain't no elitist, especially when it comes to common ground Cali PR, but these horn throwing, fist-waving, ballcaps backwards dudes would have been the same ilk that would stalk and hammer Ness and his pals when they first started out in the game thirty-plus years ago. Oh well, everyone is allowed to have fun at a Social D. show. I don't think I'll be going to the next S.D. event - be it two or ten years from now. Too much testosterone for and old softie like me.

  • Social Distortion rocked!

by Sickgirl on 2009-07-29The Odeon Events Centre - SaskatoonRating: 5 out of 5

This is the third time I have seen Social Distortion and they just get better and better! The only complaint I would have is that they don't come here often enough.

  • Social D how it was meant to be!

by CosmicHeretic on 2009-07-29The Odeon Events Centre - SaskatoonRating: 4 out of 5

The Odeon is the right venue for this band. It was a little hot inside but the sound was pretty good and merch was reasonably priced. Finally saw Social D and glad I went.

  • Social D still rocks

by Loki on 2009-07-29MacEwan Hall - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

30 years of touring has not blunted the edge of this band. If you like rockabilly, blues punk-rock, and old school country all fused together, you'd probably have liked this show. Mike Ness and co. have not lost their drive as was evident by the enthusiastic mosh pit. I can't recall the last time I went to a sing-along punk show that included crowd surfing to Bob Dylan.

  • Excellent show!

Great sound, Mike Ness' voice was amazing as usual! Loved the show!

  • Social D need I say more?

by ceemac on 2009-07-29The Odeon Events Centre - SaskatoonRating: 4 out of 5

I will say this, they put on a great show for everyone, these guys are long time rockers and it shows in their dedication to perform; amazing live. I am glad to have stumbled upon these tickets!! The atmosphere was awesome and the set drew me in, great opening band too. I don't know much about 'Civet' or 'The Strangers' but they had me sneaking closer to the stage every minute... then the climax for Social D topped it off! Great evening - it was well worth it for me to drive a couple hours to see these guys. I really enjoyed some of their newer stuff that I haven't heard before this. Their music will live on!

  • Social Distortion was so sick

    by db4211 on 2009-07-28MacEwan Hall - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Social Distortion was one of the best shows I have seen from start to finish. The supporting line up really helped to set the stage for the night, and Civet was one of the best opening acts that I have ever seen.

  • Great show!! Wouldnt have missed it!!

    by Punx10 on 2009-07-28MacEwan Hall - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome Show! Just about 2 ours of full on old school punk tock. I cant wait til next go round.

  • Brilliant!

by Mashworth on 2009-07-27Edmonton Event Centre - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

Social D were brilliant! The show was exactly what we were expecting. These guys have been playing for 30 years and never get old or boring. They seem to genuinely enjoy playing and connect with the audience. Mike's voice is brilliant, the songs are awesome, venue perfect... We had a great night!

  • Fun Show :)

Had a great time! This is the second time I've seen them and once again, they didn't dissapoint. Opening act Civet was pretty cool too.

  • great energy, great set list, great performance...

Ness still knows how to rock!! Not that anyone should be expecting him to slow down, but he knows how to put on a show. the 6 or 7 song encore shows he genuinely cares about his fans, which despite lip service, you don't see very often. Great to hear they're going back into the studio in December - they've shown they still have so much to offer, and, as a fan, although I can listen to the old stuff over and over, I can't wait to hear what they come up with - I'm betting it'll be classic
