About

Styx have endured for over five decades while staying true to their progressive rock sound and theatrical live show. Since releasing their self-titled debut in 1972, Styx have sold over 54 million records worldwide between 17 studio albums, 16 compilations and nine live recordings. Notably, the band released four consecutive RIAA-certified multi-platinum albums between 1977’s The Grand Illusion, 1978’s Pieces of Eight, 1979’s Cornerstone and 1981’s Paradise Theatre, the last of which became their first to top the Billboard 200. Across their career, Styx earned eight Top 10 singles on the Hot 100, including the chart-topping “Babe” as well as “Come Sail Away” “Mr. Roboto” and their 1990 comeback single “Show Me the Way.” Despite several hiatuses and lineup changes, Styx have become one of rock’s most consistent touring acts, hosting nearly 100 live shows every year for over two decades and netting career-best earnings on massive co-headlining tours with REO Speedwagon, Foreigner and Def Leppard. In 2021, Styx released their seventeenth studio album, Crash of the Crown.

  • The concert rocked

by Alex1065 on 2009-09-12River Rock Show Theatre - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

Excellent concert. Tommy Shaw and James Young along with Gowan can still rock. Played all the favourites that I remember growing up. Would recommend seeing them for anyone who grew up with them in the 70's and 80's.

Had the chance to see Styx last night for the first time in over 30 years and i have to say it was amazing. The music brought back many wonderfull memories for my wife and I. Very cool to see Lawrence Gowan after all these yearsas well. All the old songs brought everyone to their feet and what a great oncore! Well worth the 6 month wait.

  • Styx still great after all these years!!!!!!!!!!!!

by MissShelley on 2009-09-12River Rock Show Theatre - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I have always liked Styx. Last nights show was unbelievable. They didn't fail to entertain the mostly aged crowd! As a band they work together well and include the audience every chance they get. It was also one of the longest shows we've seen at the River Rock. Very enjoyable evening.

  • Styx was dissapointing

by sachick on 2009-09-12River Rock Show Theatre - RichmondRating: 2 out of 5

The River Rock is a great concert venue, been to concerts before, but this one was not good at all. Sound was awful, vocals could not be heard over the music. The band also did not play many of their older songs, focused more on the new stuff. We found that Lulu's lounge was more entertaining, enjoyed that more than the concert.

  • blew me away

by pmclellan on 2009-09-12River Rock Show Theatre - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

I am a working musician myself and I knew these guys were good but OH MY GOD I was blown away the whole evening. Not only are their songs timeless, they are all monster players. Best concert I have seen in years!!!

  • Styx was rockin'

by ThePrincipal on 2009-09-12River Rock Show Theatre - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was fantastic. They played all their hit songs. They played the birthday song for Tommy Shaw because it was his birthday. Since Gowan has joined them, they played his "Criminal Mind" song. It was the best concert that I've seen in years. They were really into their music, but most of all, you could tell they were having fun and that's what *I* think, it's all about. They interacted with the audience a lot, tossed many freebies and came out for a great encore. I'm 35 and I've loved Styx since I was in high school. They were around before that, but I was really happy to get to see them yesterday! I would definitely go again if they came to town again! Loved the spinning keyboard - Gowan made that work right for the act!

  • Styx still Rocks

by Maddjack on 2009-09-12River Rock Show Theatre - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

Saw them last night at the River Rock and they put on a great show. From the rock solid Drumming of Todd Sucherman, Ricky Phillips pounding out the Bass (maybe just a little to much LOL or I could just be getting old ) to James “JY” Young and Tommy Shaw still battling riffs up front after all these years and Gowan stepping in seamlessly into the mix did a great job and is a real showman. They all genuinely seemed to be having a great time up there and so did the crowd.

  • Styx was a great concert

by Styxfan on 2009-09-12River Rock Show Theatre - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

I had modest expectations, but Styx were great in concert. Gowan is a great addition to the group. Very talented and great performer!

  • Styx Sill Rock

by 347Cheryl on 2009-09-12River Rock Show Theatre - RichmondRating: 4 out of 5

Great time! The sound and act was great. The River Rock theater is a fantastic venue the staff was the best. The fellow concert goers were so much fun. Yeah!

  • Still Rockin'

by Nortile on 2009-09-12River Rock Show Theatre - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

When on your way to an event to see older performers, you always wonder whether it had been better to stay home. Well that wasn't the case with STYX. They put on a memorable show. They still had the energy and the drive to give their audience a night to remember.

  • Unbelievable!! Unforgettable!!

by bluesader on 2009-09-11River Cree Resort & Casino - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

This was one of the greatest concerts I've ever been to. They rocked the River Cree Venue from start to finish of the concert! They played a lot of their greatest hits album as well as some of the stuff you don't hear too often which gave it a definite A++ in my books! I'd go again in a second!

  • Styx seems to get better every time I see them

by Sherby on 2009-09-11River Cree Resort & Casino - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

I started listening to these guys in the 80's and have seen them in concert 3 times now. They seem to be getting better with time.

  • Styx was Awesome!!!

    by 1KRT on 2009-09-11River Cree Resort & Casino - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

Styx hasn't lost a step. Tommy Shaw and the rest of the guys were amazing. Gowan's voice was perfect. Styx's version of his 1984 hit "Criminal Mind" was great as was their cover of the Beatles' "I Am The Walrus". My wife and I had a great time. We really enjoyed the show a lot.

  • It was a hot night on the river STYX!

    by Jazz17 on 2009-09-11River Cree Resort & Casino - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

STYX put on an awesome show at the River Cree Casino! Everyone was in fine form and fine voice and it was possibly the best outing of the four I've seen, in the last two years in Northern Alberta. Lots of Gowan, which was a treat for the Canadian audience, but was balanced off by the rest of the band. Along with that came some of the songs they do not perform often, such as Lady and Suite Madame Blue--another treat for those of us who have seen them a lot lately. And, to top the evening off, original band member, Chuck Panozzo, made the trip up North to see and entertain Edmontonians. It was great to see the band honour one of their own crew members, Jimmy Johnson (sp?), on his birthday by bring him out and having the crowd surprise him by singing "Happy Birthday." This band rocks, and is still around after so many years not only for their great music, but because they spare no effort in entertaining their fans. Kudos to them!

  • Styx: most enthusiasm in a long time!

by DerryC on 2009-09-11River Cree Resort & Casino - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

The show was the awesome; one of the best. I have been to several different shows, including ACDC, Metallica, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest, but this one was a very good show. I attribute this to many different reasons. The first reason is that it obviously showed they had and still have a passion for music and pleasing their fans. Secondly, they may have been a band that is not to well known in my circle of friends, but they made the show big. The third reason, they all showed so much enthusiasm for being there. I have been to many a concert where they are just standing there and play their instrument. It takes talent to move around and play your instrument, so I applaud them all.

  • Styx Always Great, Now Better!!

by Luvnaz on 2009-09-11River Cree Resort & Casino - EdmontonRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy "Freaking" Shaw. Lawrence"Canada Rocks" Gowan.... Two very amazing individuals. Tommy Shaw just keeps amazing me everytime I see Styx. So sad that the fans can't see them 5 times a year!! They play their asses off!!!

  • Styx classic!

by bluedragon on 2009-09-10River Cree Resort & Casino - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

Really enjoyable. Along with Styx songs Gawon and Tommy Smith played a few of their solo career songs. I was disappointed that more of Styx most popular song were not performed.

  • Styx was a great Blast from the Past

by dandyD on 2009-09-10River Cree Resort & Casino - EdmontonRating: 4 out of 5

This band still has it. Lots of energy and still appear to have a lot of fun performing. Played some of their all time greats to perfection. Lawrence Gown added a great Canadian twist to the night and his antics, great vocals and keyboard mastery were appreciated by the crowd. A great night.
