About

Four years after forming in a London school, The xx unleashed their 2009 eponymous debut via Young Turks. The 11-track collection not only earned accolades from critics across the globe, but it also scored the U.K.’s coveted Mercury Prize and landed the dream-pop band in the limelight stateside. Singles from their indie-label foray graced American television programs like “Person of Interest” and “90210,” as well as a Karl Lagerfeld runway show and NBC’s coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Along with their own headlining theater tours and concerts alongside Friendly Fires, Hundred Waters and The Big Pink, the musical trio has performed at several festivals, including the Matt Groening-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties in 2010, Coachella, Sasquatch Festival and Lollapalooza, among others.

For their most recent effort, 2012’s “Coexist,” the indie pop outfit expanded their ticket-buying base with post-dubstep EDM influences. Though mellow, these touches can be heard in the album’s first two singles, “Angels” and “Chained.”

The XX played all my favourite songs and they performed amazingly professional. Both their vocal were spectacular. Couldn't ask for more. Only will see them again and again!

  • so glad i went to this

i almost didn't make this show. but so glad i did. first of all, echo beach is a cool location. crossing that bridge and walking to the band was lovely. great parking facilities too. easy in easy out. now the band. wow! just wow! i wasn't expecting the quality of sound that they put out there. i heard the opening band from the parking lot and it sounded just fine. but the xx were amazing. it was so loud but i could literally hear the people next to me talking (and they were not yelling) . it was like romy and jamie were just talking and whispering but they were miked so perfectly that their voices didn't get overwhelmed by the music. and of course, i love the xx so i loved the music. i did not know that and outdoor concert could sound so great.

I loved this band before hand and was told that their live shows are unbelievably awesome. The band was perfect and seemed so genuinely happy to be there. I danced pretty much nonstop from start to finish. I WILL SEE THEM AGAIN!!!!

I loved the simple but very effective stage decor. Danced more than I expected to.

by XXFAN on 2012-07-31Métropolis - MontrealRating: 5 out of 5

With a great first part by Jacques Green, the crowd was hyped when The xx came on stage. They absolutely killed it. Not much talking between songs, just an amzing 1h30-2hrs of great music!! Gave me shivers throughout the whole perfomance!

  • The XX showcase their new album Co-exist.

by canuck086 on 2012-07-30The Phoenix Concert Theatre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

The XX show was amazing. They played their entire debut album as well as new tracks from their upcoming album Co-Exist. The new tracks have more of a house influence to them while still retaining the restrained beauty of The XX. The crowd was singing along throughout the show. It was unfortunate how many people decided to have their phones in the air for the show. Overall the vibe was great and if you get a chance to see The XX in a small club, its their ideal setting.

  • It's better recorded

by Nena226 on 2012-07-30The Phoenix Concert Theatre - TorontoRating: 1 out of 5

This show was kind of a waste of money. As much as their second half sounded exactly like it was on the album, which is great, the first half of the show there didn't seem to be much harmony between the band members. It seemed as though the bassist wanted to go slower and the singer wanted to go faster. Also, when I go to the show, I go not only for musical talent but for showmanship. I'm not saying crazy light show or anything like that, but a few words here and there from the artist so that it feels as though they are playing to the audience, and not to themselves. Add to that the ridiculous amount of smoke going off so that you could barely see them, the terrible sound with feedback all the time, made for a disappointing first half and a not much better second one. I prefer listening to this great band in the comfort of my own home with my own surround sound which, funny enough, sounds way better than the sound system at the Phoenix. Its too bad, I was really excited for this show!
