Chicago Blackhawks History

The Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the "Original Six" group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013 — beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games — and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center — which opened in 1994 — is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game — the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

Never purchase standing room - Unwatchable

by Anonymous on 2013-11-13United Center - Chicago

The hockey game and atmosphere was great, but the standing room sections were the worst I have ever been apart of. I have purchased standing tickets in Toronto and Ottawa for NHL games and there is no obstruction of the ice surface and there are no "security guards" that can't even look you in the face when you try to speak to them, who tell you to no lean about 2 inches against a seatbelt barrier when there was nothing but open space between the back of the seats and where we were sitting. These standing section "seats" were atrocious. The usher did not allow us to lean on the seatbelt barrier and was very rude about it, since the view was extremely obstructed. I am six foot tall so I was able to look over the bar behind the seats, however my girlfriend is not six foot tall, therefore she was not able to see anything for the whole game.

Blackhawks Game was a great experience

    by Hockeyfan64 on 2011-10-24United Center - Chicago

The environment is fan friendly. The people were nice and the atmosphere is amazing. Chicago has a great fan base. Sightlines were good but from our seats it was hard to see the action in the other goal as we had to look through the penalty box. It would be nice if they had beverage and food service directly to the seats rather than just the first row.

    Much better than last year

by bird1616 on 2011-10-05Credit Union Centre - Saskatoon

Good to see that some bigger named players came out skate and looked as if they put on a good effort. Teams have to remember we out here dont get to see NHL hockey live as much as we would like. I guess the next best thing after that would be regular season game here. Then who knows maybe our own team one day

    Atmosphere was incredible

    by missy5 on 2011-09-30United Center - Chicago

The United Centre was a great place to see a game. The crowd was unbelievable as they love their Chicago Blackhawks. My husband has loved this team from the early 1960's and he talked to the great fans around him about the history and players that played for this great team. We will definitly return someday.

Really Seth? The Oilers sent a split squad? Really? In hockey? A split squad? Really Amy! And the Hawks sent 3 players you've heard of before? Really? Outstanding! Great value for $40. Unfortunately we paid $100 a seat, really! FAIL

Your basic neutral site exhibition game

by Anonymous on 2011-09-28Credit Union Centre - Saskatoon

Given that it was an exhibition game, and a neutral site game at that, on a night where Edmonton was playing with a split squad, I still expected more 'stars' to be out, especially on the Blackhawk side. Still a well played and enjoyable game for those who don't have access to NHL hockey. Crowd was somewhat into the game, but not like one would see for a home game.

NHL game in Toon Town unforgettable

by wildbear123 on 2011-09-28Credit Union Centre - Saskatoon

As far as the game goes it was ran very professional and I am an Edmonton Oilers fan so them winning, even made it better. The beer they served taste like crap. I have drank Great Western beer and it tasted nothing like the crap they were serving. If the Credit Union Center wants to make more money off beer sales get better beer. Exiting the parking lot was crazy also, they should look at something there also for the big ticket events.

Chicago Blackhawks/Edmonton Oilers pre season game

by Carebear69 on 2011-09-26Credit Union Centre - Saskatoon

First time watching a live NHL hockey game. Everyone enjoyed the game. First NHL game that my son was able to go too. The atmosphere during the game was totally awesome. Should have more NHL games available for people to go too.

Overall it was pretty good. It would have been nice to see a little more of the big names in the NHL as opposed to one or two. But it was still cool to have a couple of them come to my hometown to play hockey.

    NHL Hockey in Saskatoon

by crosshair on 2011-09-24Credit Union Centre - Saskatoon

Many, many thanks to the NHL for having these two teams play in our community. The spirt of the game thrives here as it does throughout Canada. I was luckey enough to score tickets to this game. The excitment from the begining upon walking in with my children, pulling me to get to our seats as soon as possible, not even wanting to stop for treats, wonderful. That is until dad had to go get the food and drinks for 4 hungry mouths on his own. would not trade a minute of it. Then time for the game. I watched, and admittedly sang along with the national anthem of both countries as well as did many others around me. The crowd cheering for the players from both teams.I know that the teams split up players to play at diffrent venues and field mostly newer player to see where they might fit in the regular season if called up, and who will make the teams. This does not take away from the action, or my daughters scream of owy when a plyer is checked against the glass in front of us. she later started to cheer when this happened. Both teams were excellant. Everyone loved the game and sitting there after watching the rink clear out, I was struck by how this game transends generations, it was loved by my grandparents, my parents myself and now it appears my kids. We even brought our cousin who never watched a live game before of any hockey, and she commented that it was intence and she really enjoyed it. So thanks to the NHL, The Edmonton Oilers, The Chicago Blackhawks, and the players for coming out to entertain the fans of old, and inspire the newest generation of fans.

Very entertaining game, fun atmosphere I only wish there was meet and greet with the NHL players for fans to maybe get a photo with them or an autograph A free pre-game practice in the morning would also be cool to watch

Took my 9 yr old son & his friend for a surprise birthday gift. Loved watching his favorite team. Super seats. Disappointed it was a split squad game. Did not realize this when I bought the tickets. Probably would have gone anyway.

    Oilers/Blackhawks fun to watch

by oilslick99 on 2011-09-23Credit Union Centre - Saskatoon

Really enjoyed the Oilers/Blackhawks game at CUC. Nice to see a lot of the familiar faces from the Oilers. Hawks could have sent a few more, but overall was very entertaining. I will go again.

I enjoyed the hockey game. The fans in the stands were enthusiastic which made for a good time watching. I had my two month old son with and felt comfortable around everyone. I would definitely purchase tickets again for another event like this.

    Boring

by hotrod45 on 2011-09-22Credit Union Centre - Saskatoon

The game was lackluster at best. Junior levels of hockey are more exciting. The game was definitely not an all out performance. Another dtreaction was the suopposed policy of no camera use at the game. I saw a security guard seize some poor giy's camera for filming parts of the game while there were hundreds of other people doing the same thing while this guys camera was taken. He told me he and his family will not attend another game. Judging ho we easy it was to get tickets this year the attendance will continue to wane due to the low quality of the hockey as well as the cost.
