Marianas Trench in Concert

Multi-Platinum selling progressive pop band Marianas Trench has been big news in Canada for years, and they caught on with US audiences in a major way following their acclaimed 2015 album Astoria, a slick collection of larger-than-life pop masterpieces that showcased their playful lyrical sensibility and knack for anthemic choruses. In concert, Marianas Trench is a whirlwind of emotion and attitude, rocking the stage with adrenaline-filled performances that put their tight musicianship front and center. Frontman Josh Ramsay is a born performer, and his energy is completely infectious as he sings his heart out on upbeat jams like "This Means War" and "Celebrity Status." The rest of the band keeps pace with lively performances that always leave fans thoroughly rocked and ready for more.

Marianas Trench Background

Marianas Trench was formed in Vancouver in 2001 by Josh Ramsay, a singer-songwriter and guitarist who previously fronted the group Ramsay Fiction. He joined forces with Matt Webb (lead guitar), Mike Ayley (bass), and Ian Casselman (drums), and Marianas Trench made their debut in 2002 with a self-titled EP. In 2006, the band released their full-length debut album Fix Me on 604 Records, which they supported with extensive touring across Canada. The album went gold in Canada, but its success paled in comparison to the band's 2009 sophomore LP Masterpiece Theatre, a Top 5 hit on the Canadian Albums Chart that established them as pop royalty virtually overnight. Their third album Ever After was equally well-received, cracking the Top 10 and earning a prestigious Juno Award nomination for Album of the Year, and earning the band the title of Juno Award winners for Group of the Year in 2013. Their fourth album Astoria earned them a 2016 Juno nomination for Group of the Year and unleashed the power ballad Who Do You Love. It also opened up Marianas Trench to the European market where the band toured twice in support of Astoria. Currently in the studio, Marianas Trench is hard at work putting the finishing touches on their 5th album set for release in early 2019.

  • Marianas Trench & Walk off the Earth were amazing!

by marcnictom on 2016-04-10Sandman Centre - KamloopsRating: 5 out of 5

I took my 3 kids and it was my youngest daughters first concert, Marianas Trench was fantastic and didn't disappoint! It was fun, entertaining, and real! The vocals were incredible, and we knew almost every song! Lots of interaction with the crowd. Very entertaining. I was very surprised by Walk off the Earth, LOVED them!! They sounded amazing, they were fun and entertaining!! Would definitely go to either of their concerts again!

  • The Concert was great!

What an awesome show to watch. The special guests Walk off the Earth were amazing. Marianas Trench was outstanding. I can't wait till they come back.

  • Marianas Trench was terrible!!

by Moonero on 2016-04-10Sandman Centre - KamloopsRating: 2 out of 5

The opening acts were both great, but MT was terrible. You couldn't understand a word he sang, he was all over the place. I couldn't even sing along with the songs they were that bad. It seemed like he was trying to channel his inner Mick Jagger but it just made him look stupid. He was just plain weird!! I wouldn't pay $5 to see them again.

  • Perfect show

by MBMusic on 2016-04-06Stampede Corral - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Marianas trench was absolutely amazing. They are excellent performers and very audience engaging. Everything was excellent, the performing, the set order, and the lighting and staging it was all perfectly done. Kieran Mercer was also great he is absolutely a well developing musician and some day he will be excellent, someday he will be the main performance in the saddledome. Walk off the earth had a really cool performance, they did a lot of cobra but that was fine because they're covers (and originals) were amazing! If any of the performers come back I would go to theyre concert!

  • Last show at corral well done!

Amazing concert. One of the best we have been to. Walk off the earth was fantastic. They have such musical talent and stage presence. Marianna's trench did a great show with lots of audience interaction. My very first concert was at the corral. I am very glad my kids got to have the experience of such a good concert in this great venue.

Marianas Trench Rocked it!! Loved the concert. Show was nice small with it being in the corral. Sound was amazing and so was the talent!! Can't wait to see them again.

  • Marianas Trench impresses

You know, although I've listed to the CD's numerous times, it really didn't strike me what an amazing vocal range he has! I heard remnants of Queen, Aerosmith and Rolling Stones! Great show! Very entertaining!

Kieran Mercer did a good job opening the show! Walk Off the Earth was amazing!!! Was a bit disappointed with Marianas Trench's show though. The sound seemed off, almost muffled at times. Did not like the single piano at the back, sorry Josh, was pretty off key. Was it just the sound system?!

  • Mariana's Trench brought the house down!

by Jolene on 2016-04-05Stampede Corral - CalgaryRating: 4 out of 5

The Trench were amazing, had great energy and kept the crowd standing. Walk off the earth were also awesome and are definitely up and comers! I'd def see them both again.

  • Marianas Trench has lost the edge...

    by CWL13 on 2016-04-05Stampede Corral - CalgaryRating: 3 out of 5

Just Josh.... Sound was terrible and couldn't tell what was live and what was tape cued. Big fan of the talent but the band was better when it was less glam and more rock.

  • AWESOME

As always Marianas Trench put on an awesome Show and Josh continually includes all levels of ticket holders by crowd walking and having a back stage! As this time around we were late buying tickets and were in the back of the venue, so much appreciated!!!! Walk off the Earth was a great opener as well! So great pick!

  • MARIANAS TRENCH

    by Marianafan1 on 2016-04-05Stampede Corral - CalgaryRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing as always. Great crowd interraction. Amazing performance by Opening Acts, and of Course Marianas Trench. Parents thinking of taking kids under 13 to MT know the music before you go, not all of it is made for the radio, yes there is swears.

It what's an amazing show. The voices from these artists are incredible and the light show was spectacular. I definitely recommend if anyone go to this concert they will have an excellent time.

  • Marianas Trench was horrible!

by monstermeow on 2016-04-04Enmax Centrium - Red DeerRating: 3 out of 5

First I want to say Walk Off the Earth was phenomenal! Their stage act was amazing and their music was sooo good. Unlike Marianas Trench who was horrible. They didn't have anything going on, on the stage (besides some lights) There was just three guys standing at the mics, which wouldn't have been bad if the lead singer could actually sing! He barely even tried to sing all the words. This is the second time we have gone to see Marianas Trench (mostly because we wanted to see Walk Off the Earth) and the singing was horrible. We walked out of both concerts it was that bad. Which is too bad, cause I really enjoy their music when it's played on the radio. Guess its harder to audio tune them when they play live.

  • Walk Off the Earth was A M A Z I N G ! ! !

by Paddylang on 2016-04-02Enmax Centrium - Red DeerRating: 5 out of 5

Walk Off The Earth stole, and made, the show. They were brilliant. If go and them again any day.

  • Meh compared to last Rexall performance

by KCED on 2016-04-02Rexall Place - EdmontonRating: 3 out of 5

I saw Mariana's Trench in Edmonton Rexall a few years ago and Josh Ramsey was spectacular. Tonight? He was different. Mostly he didn't really sing. He kind of did a weird sort of a "skip" sing where he'd sing and then fade out, then sing, then face out. Lots of falsetto, not much "real" voice. At first I thought possibly he was under the influence - but after awhile I just felt he was probably favoring his voice. He was still good but he wasn't great - let his band carry a lot of the singing. Also - he didn't use the side screens this time, so he was hard to see. He DID come way out into the audience, and let people touch him and take selfies etc. which was pretty cool. But yeah... it felt like he was off his game - although maybe I wouldn't feel that way if I didn't have his last Rexall performance to compare to. His band was outstanding, just like last time.

Walk off the earth was phenomenal! Everything they did was amazing! Marianas trench put on a great show, super dramatic! I wish a bit Joshua Ramsey wasn't trying quite so hard. He sounds great, be yourself not a jagger/bowie/Tyler mix.

  • Marianas Trench very DISAPPOINTING!!!

by KimmerRD on 2016-03-31Enmax - Red DeerRating: 1 out of 5

I purchased tickets as a Christmas Gift and have been looking forward to this concert for months and what a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT Mariannas Trench turned out to be! My 9 year old daughter knew the lyrics better than the band, the performance really was awful and we actually left before the last set because we were so confused and annoyed by the end of the night. Didn't sound anything like the recorded tracks we have come to love at home, singing was out of tune and the performance was a HOT-MESS. 2 THUMBS DOWN! Thank goodness for Walk Off the Earth who really nailed it and were truly the main event and entertainment for the evening.

  • Marianas Trench was one of the best I've been too

by Prairiehunnybunny on 2016-03-30MTS Centre - WinnipegRating: 5 out of 5

To start the night off, Keiran Mercer opened and although many of us in the crowd didn't know who he was he was still fabulous His music and band did a great job in both singing and entertaining. Walk off the earth was next to perform and they too did a great performance. The songs were a little bit folky but personally I love that so I enjoyed it. At the end of their performance they gave a fan a ukulele :) and now for the main act. Marianas Trench was fantastic. The stage didn't have a big screen only a back drop of which they had projectors project images onto. Even though there was no screen to watch the 4 gentlemen play Josh Ramsay made up for that with his humour and his interactiveness with the audience. The stage had catwalks coming out to the sides so people in the 100's could practically touch the band members when they came out. The band got people to sing along with them and at one point Josh Ramsay jumped off stage and did a lap around the floor of the stadium. The band played both a mix of their old hits and their newest and of course playing some songs from their newest album. The band was very very thankful of their fans and you could tell Winnipeg was having a ball because the band did 3 encores. The reason I liked this concert so much could be the fact that I had very low expectations going into it, however I was very much impressed and will 100% see them again when they come back to Winnipeg.
