Few others can do what Neil Young did last night at the Jubilee Auditorium - a solo performance that seemed to defy the limits of a single performer.
Starting quietly on an acoustic guitar, Young's distinctive voice rang out like a bell, wavering high and clear and strong, combined with guitarwork that can only be called the mastery of his craft. The audience at the Jubilee was spellbound throughout, as it was clear that we witnessed the zenith of a lifetime of creativity fueled by the love, pain, beauty and war of our generations since the 60's - and we've all been along for the ride.
Young's electric guitar sets were absolutely magnificent (as were his guitars). Young pounded and stroked and picked and petted the instruments, creating a magical wall of sound and power and sensitivity that literally transcended the need for a band. Incredible!
Ultimately, it was Young and his voice and his message breathed life into the music. Young's lyrics, and his delivery, are a window into his heart and soul, as much as they were a mirror to a place within all of us. And that's what resonates with an audience. Young's performance last night was simply stellar.
