    Neil Young - disappointment

by FestusAB on 2010-07-25Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The music was good but for me Neil had no connection with an audience that absolutely loved him. Not even a token "good evening Calgary" -- only a couple of hand waves - even that old curmudgeon Van Morrison manages more. Could have stayed at home and listened to the vinyl and cds. On the bright side the sound was great and the audience was great. As very long term fan I was disappointed. Sorry Neil -- those notes weren't for me.

Neil was everything I expected. His voice is still great and he keeps writing music we all understand. He is a Canadian icon. Great venue also! Thank You.

    AMAZING!!! (From a previous non-fan!)

by earthlymagdalena on 2010-07-25Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

My boyfriend is the biggest Neil Young fan and was stoked when Neil Young added a stop in Calgary. Let me start by saying that I was not a Neil Young fan (my prefered genre is Metal). This concert was nothing short of amazing! I was in awe the entire concert. I picked up on songs that my boyfriend had played me and very much enjoyed the new songs as well. After The Gold Rush brought tears to my eyes and I lost it when he played the next song on the grand piano. I was wiping away tears that were streaming down my face. Neil Young's voice and talent was made to be heard live and the Jubilee was the perfect venue. Even being up on the 2nd balcony, it felt home-y and intimate. Even if you are not a Neil Young fan like I was, I would highly HIGLHY recommend this to anyone!

    Vintage Neil + New Neil

by fishbytr on 2010-07-25Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

We got Huckleberry Neil (Old Man) as well as Electrified Neil (Cortez the Killer) in a show that also featured excellent new songs. There is no Bad Neil.

    A One-Man Tour de Force

by Sukhumvit21 on 2010-07-25Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

Few others can do what Neil Young did last night at the Jubilee Auditorium - a solo performance that seemed to defy the limits of a single performer. Starting quietly on an acoustic guitar, Young's distinctive voice rang out like a bell, wavering high and clear and strong, combined with guitarwork that can only be called the mastery of his craft. The audience at the Jubilee was spellbound throughout, as it was clear that we witnessed the zenith of a lifetime of creativity fueled by the love, pain, beauty and war of our generations since the 60's - and we've all been along for the ride. Young's electric guitar sets were absolutely magnificent (as were his guitars). Young pounded and stroked and picked and petted the instruments, creating a magical wall of sound and power and sensitivity that literally transcended the need for a band. Incredible! Ultimately, it was Young and his voice and his message breathed life into the music. Young's lyrics, and his delivery, are a window into his heart and soul, as much as they were a mirror to a place within all of us. And that's what resonates with an audience. Young's performance last night was simply stellar.

    Neil Young

by Sstar on 2010-07-25Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

The only thing that would have made it better was about 12 more hours of his acoustic stuff.

Neil Young still rocks at 64

by bartzack on 2010-07-25Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I am not as huge of a fan as my husband, but we both agreed we would have likes more of his old songs played; I was disappointed Southern Man and Heart of Gold were not performed. I loved the way the concert started off and then there were lots of songs from his new album. Too many, in my opinion. His voice is still awesome and he is truly a very talented musician.

    Not at his best

by MonteyDomi on 2010-07-25Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

A short set and even shorter encore ( as in 2 songs). We felt like he was just getting warmed up and it was over. Would have liked to hear more acoustic songs and we were left wondering why he went to the trouble of bringing a piano, organ and a keyboard on stage if he was only going to play one song on each...

    Neil Young - mind boggling

by Squarepuck on 2010-07-25Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

You can't put a price on the Neil Young concert at the Jubilee Saturday night (July 24th) - Neil was, well ... Neil - at his best. Rare is the artist who can play a song you've never heard before and keep you riveted to your chair. Had the tickets been $400 each it would still have been great value.

My first time seeing Neil. The show really could not have been any better. One man and his music. Perfect! His voice is strong, his lyrics as powerful and touching as ever and can that guy ever play the guitar!! I've seen a lot of rock shows over the years but I've never seen a better show that Neil Young in Calgary July 25 2010.

While I am solidly in the oldies camp I am eager to hear what he has chosen to bestow on us. If you are looking for mainstream, forget it, this is a creative genius. Go with an open mind you won't be disappointed.

    Neil Young Remains Ageless

by bayoubunny66 on 2010-07-24Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Despite the passage of many decades, during which he has fine-tuned his diverse musical abilities, Neil young remains as interesting and fresh as ever. He performed several new tunes, that focused largely on wistful looks at the passage of time and the ongoing need for forging a better tomorrow, but these new songs blended in well with the standards that kept the crowd on its feet screaming for more. The solo performance on a stripped-down stage kept the set intense and personal.

    I was too far away.

by frideo on 2010-07-24Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

My fault that for that. By the time I got around to getting a ticket, all the good ones were gone. Neil was amazing to me. His ability to play all the different guitar types and make them all sound great is no mean feat. Sometimes I wished there was more of a backup band. It was like listening to an old friend. Somewhat comforting and reassuring; like he's always going to be there. I also think he could have been a bit more vocal with the audience. Very few words were exchanged except through music.

    Neil at his best

by stink93 on 2010-07-24Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Edmonton

Neil covered a lot of hits and mixed things up with acoustic numbers, electric guitar, piano, and an organ... and (obviously) he had the harmonica too. It was a great show, the only thing I'm not sure of was the ending. Don't know if he intended to end the show as he did or he meant to plan another song but was frustrated for some reason. All in all, great show!
