NEW ORDER IN CONCERT:
As one of the most influential new wave bands of the '80s, New Order brought electronic dance music to the forefront of mainstream consciousness, setting the tone for generations of music to come. EDM progenitors like "Blue Monday" and "Bizarre Love Triangle" sound as fresh today as they did 30 years ago, making the band a continued presence atop festival bills around the globe. Bernard Sumner and co. sounded as sharp as ever on tour in 2013, treating fans to an emotional Joy Division tribute during their encores and setting expectations sky high for their 2014 appearances.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Formed in the wake of legendary post-punk band Joy Division, New Order pressed on after late-frontman Ian Curtis' suicide with a decidedly more optimistic sound than the group's Curtis-fronted incarnation. With former guitarist/keyboardist Bernard Sumner assuming vocal duties under the new moniker, New Order made their album debut in 1981 with Movement, breaking from the gravity of their previous work with buoyant tracks like "Dreams Never End." 1983 follow-up Power, Corruption & Lies really broke the mold, exploring a fusion of rock and early techno that brought them international fame and influenced much of the decade's ensuing music. Over nine studio albums, New Order have built one of the most beloved legacies in popular music, continuing to thrill awestruck fans both in the studio and on the road.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"Bernard and company came with a lot of energy. Played lots of New Order faves and dug deep for some Joy Division chestnuts."
"Perfect show. They played all the hits and closed with a flawless three song Joy Division encore. They sounded great"
"New Order still has it!!! Saw them back in the 80's & this show was just as awesome!"
Great two hours show. My son and I enjoyed it very much.
We were standing the whole show!! Every song was superb
It was a killer time great weather amazing light show very 80's and inventive Pure FUN bob
OMG!! What an amazing show. Band never put themselves ahead of the music. Everyone was dancing and having a great time. The hits were one after another. A wonderful tribute moment to Ian Curtis & Joy Division during the encore. The Venue was perfect. The sound was awesome.
She is a 80's super-fan and this tickled her fancy. They sounded much like their albums if you liked those.
Still a great band after so many years! Enjoyed every songs and the light show too. If I could, I would love to see them again this year. Please come back to Vancouver, SOON!
Stunning show and incredible sound live! My first time to see New Order in concert but have listened to records and CD's for years. Vancouver was fortunate to have a live show scheduled here as I believe there were only 8 stops on this North American tour. Hope the band hangs in there in its current form and is back again.
I danced like I hadn't danced in years. Sweat dripping off me. (so glad I work out:)
Great show, by great band. I've been wanting to see them for a while and I am so glad I did!
It would have been nice to see the opening bands but someone decided to turn their amps to 11. Everyone in the lobby was complaining about it. Thankfully New Order sounded absolutely perfect and drove the packed venue to a constant standing ovation of whiteys dancing badly, especially me! To drive my wife and 11yr old son from Edmonton to Vancouver is no big deal to see Daddys alltime favorite band. I just felt cheated at 2hrs (incl encore). Maybe leaving the audience sated could increase the tours from just 5 or 6 cities in all North America and sell out stadiums???
They played the sound track to my youth. I was fortunate to share this event with friends that I shared it with back when New Order came on the scene. A great night of nostalgia and dancing!! The acoustics at the venue could have been better, but the vibe was perfect. Gracias
Amazing show. Made me go back to my old albums of New Order and Joy Division to relive that time. I forgot how good they are. Audience stood up on song one - and rightly so as all the songs were fantastic. Tight set, they still have the "touch".
It was very nice to see one of my favorite band after 21 years ( Toronto) , based on their live show history back in the 80's , I always have low expectation on the chosen play list , Bernard Summer's singing , or minimalistic stage set up ... But after having seen the Pet Shop Boys at the same venue last year , the boys who takes care of the sound system were not up to par , it was just too loud , you could not even listen to Bernard's singing , when you see concert goers wearing hearing protective gear even though it's a " rock" concert , you know something is wrong so for 98$ I was disappointed , and that's the bottom line .
Nice set from New Order (with the possible exception of Shell Shock which was missing). I saw them play the identical set at the 2013 version of the Osheaga festival in Montreal but this time that young dude playing Peter Hook's bass parts bothered me a lot more. Sumner's voice is still strong and it was a fun night of nostagia. Sound was a little suspect at times. The 4 Joy Division tunes they played (and the classic Love Will Tear Us Apart) were welcome additions.
I am a huge concert goer and I have to say this is the first one I have ever walked out on. I tend to only go to small venue as I find the acoustics in the big arenas horrid. I'm sad to say that whomever did the sound check for this concert needs to retire, it was WAY too loud. Perhaps it was to drown the flatness of Bernard's voice.
I'll summarize all the GOOD things about this show: -my seats were great -the lighting was good -it wasn't too short -there were bands I should have enjoyed (more) that last note was my biggest problem. Did they even do a sound check? It was LOUD. 5pm the next day and my ears were still ringing - and I was wearing earplugs! Don't get me wrong, I go to plenty of concerts where you'd expect something like that - metal, hard rock, industrial, whatever.. but at ANY show you shouldn't be suffering physical pain, and you should be able to hear the vocals/guitars/etc above all the distortion! I might have been less upset if it weren't for the other (smaller) bad things about this show: -price, $225 for two tickets that weren't even general admission? -the bartenders... ok so $6 for a beer, I can almost live with that.. but when it's not even a whole can? I saw one bartender start pouring one beer into a glass then finish it off in another.. same with the $10 sparkling wine! so thats $10 for what, 180ml?? -poor communication, tickets said 730 doors "with guests". Up until the day of the show, and even into the late afternoon, there was nothing else. Then suddenly on the LiveNation twitter account (not on facebook, not livevan, nowhere else), they announce that Run Run Run will be opening the show - and doors are now 630. Great! What if you are actually a Run Run Run fan and now you don't have tickets? Why even have an opening band if you're not going to tell anyone who they are and when they will be on? Ridiculous! Anyway, I generally do like the queen elizabeth, but it seems like everytime they're doing a "rock/pop/anything that isn't classical music" they just crank it all to 11 and walk away. Unacceptable!
The worst sound quality of any show I have been to. The lighting was great, the band performed well but yopu couldn't even hear the vocals or keys over the awful distortion. I love it loud, but this was crap
Great music from classic alternative music icon Johnny Marr and innovators of synthetic new wave music New Order. Muddy sound and poor crowd control marred the event
New Order were amazing. One of the best shows I've ever been to. Saw them in Toronto on Oct 23/12
Amazing sound and high quality visuals! They played 3 Joy Division songs and a lots of succes of NO presents on every albums. Concert was to short for me, I wanted more, but Bernard Sumner said they loved to play more but the Sony Center had strict closing times to respect...I had to be there, it's my favorite band since 1988.
